So what's the most boneheaded thing you've done?

Tonight I was going to install my lower intake back on the truck, emphasis on the word "was"!!! Well anyways I drag all my tools home from work, get everything laid out on the bench and realize that I left the gaskets and silicone at work  So I take the 40 min round trip drive back to work (over $3 a gallon, twice in one day    ) and get it. I get home and open the silicone tube and it is hard as a rock from being open, poke hole in bottom of tube and use the last of it that way. Grab the gaskets and put them on, grab the intake and put it on, proceed to torque all the bolts down. Go to install the dist. and something isn't right it wont sit down all the way and it isn't making a metal/metal sound, almost softer WTF. So I manage to get my head over the hole for the dist. and shine a light down it and guess what is looking back up at me with a big F U???
The god damned rags that were catching all the old gasket when I was cleaning the heads up   SOB!!!!!

Make me feel better and tell me some of your dumbest moves!!!

So far, just crossed spark wires when putting in new ones. Then got on the forum and said "my truck runs like crap!" Someone said, go back and check the wires. Doh! I was soooo careful too!

I'm sure there'll be more in my future...

I got a SY. No, It was ranting about only showing 12lbs of boost on Dm when my Guage shows 15lbs. I bought a new guage and the same thing. Then someone told me I had to adjust the DM for the 3 bar map.

Re: So what's the most boneheaded thing you've done?

once upon a time i left the oilpump drive shaft out and assembled the whole engine, put it in the truck, and found the drive shaft wrapped up with the distributor. instead of taking the motor back out, i cut the bottom of the oilpan off 3 sides, folded it down, unbolted the oilpump, installed the shaft, folded the oilpan back up and welded it up tight. dropped the distributor in and ran the plug wires, poured the oil in and fired her up. talk about feeling like a complete idiot. it would be one thing if i had never built a motor before, but i had done it plenty of times before. shit happens though...

Re: So what's the most boneheaded thing you've done?

Im going to go ahead and say that no matter what is posted, I take the cake on all boneheaded things done.

I crashed my Syclone into another Syclone.

To date, I am the only person that I am aware of that has ever crashed their sportmachine into another.

Long story short...few years back I was following Ian Turgeon (SyTyArchives) back to his apartment after picking up some free buffalo wings I snagged from the place I worked at the time. He was ahead of me by a good distance and came to a stop in the Right Turn lane at the insection ahead. I was slowing down as I approached while watching traffic to the left to see it was going to be clear by the time I got up to the intersection. I could see Ian in my perifial (sp?) vision and saw him move forward.... I took it as he was moving out and doing the right turn.... I looked back to the left for traffic still slowing down and glanced back only to see Ian still there.... stood on the brake and came to a stop right as my bumper and right fender touched Ians tailgate and bumper, so it wasnt a high speed hit, just a 3000+lb truck stopping on top of another. Light damage overall.

It ended with me getting 2 tickets. My luck, 4 cops where sitting as the gas station right next to us and hearing Ian yell "F&CK", they waived both of us in. Tried to explain we knew each other, we'll deal with insurance, no big deal..... nah, I got served with wreckless and expired license (I had an appointment set in 2 days to renew, so that ticket got waived).

Smashed tailgate, rear bumper cover, rear bumper support, front bumper cover, front bumper support, passenger side cladding arch, OEM GM fender, OEM GM grille, side marker lights, bumper lights, and paint.... over $4000 combined damage for both trucks due to State Farm using GM prices for all the cladding.

My mistake... and thankfully Ian is a understanding person and a good friend. He actually sat there and ate some buffalo wings while the cop wrote my tickets. I think he was amused by me kicking my own ass for such a stupid mistake.

Re: So what's the most boneheaded thing you've done?

I had my ex Syclone at a gas station a few or so years back one night w/an ex g/f. I left it in neutral and couldn't get the key out and lost it and went off on her about how to just push down on the release lever. Then she went off on me saying thats what you get for having a lil POS truck until my dumbass realized that all I had to do was just put it in park :rotf:

Re: So what's the most boneheaded thing you've done?

Well when i first bought my Ty, i gave it a full tune up, and when installing the plug wires i ran them in clockwise direction around the cap 123456, and well then proceded to freak out that it didnt want to start and when it did ran like shit, well i was 180 degrees out, so i ran them in the counterclockwise direction and all was good.

Well about 3 months later i pulled the engine to replace the mounts, new converter, trans mounts, gear box and shaft and some general clean up and what not, well when i put every thing back in was very careful to put the sprak plug wires on right, and well i did it again and was way off and spent almost 2 hours trying to firgure out why the dam thing didnt want to start and run.

I will say that i was in a hurry and it was late both times as i was thrashing to get it running so that i had a way to work the next day, but its no excuse for doing it twice.

Re: So what's the most boneheaded thing you've done?

I did the "Adam" move in college (no sy's involved) but the guy in front of me was my teacher with all my class as his passengers. (we were heading on a field trip). When your in an engineering courses, everybody knows everybody, class size is small, etc. Um yea did I hear about that one for a long time.

Then this one time I had a motor built fresh, 4 bolt caps, JE pistons, vortec heads, the whole drill. Crank it won't start, mess with it for a few days, finally notice a valve is bent. I was pissed, called the engine shop up, bitched them out for fubar'ing the new motor, etc. Head up there with motor in hand, we put it on stand at shop, owner comes in with drop light looks down the port and asks me what the bolt is for jammed in the intake valve. Talk about feeling small. Still not sure how that bolt got in there, I think it jumped off the cowl while I was transporting the truck in an enclosed trailer after the engine was installed, before the upper was put on.

Wait syty.net doesn't have enough bandwidth for me to post all my stories.

Not Sy/Ty, but I failed to tighten an oil filter all the way up on my wife's Isuzu I-Mark after an oil change. She made it a mile down the road before it threw a rod.

mine isnt sy/ty either but when jump starting a van in the parking lot of my school I accidentaly crossed the pos/neg. cables resulting in a lot of sparks and a suprisingly large fire  . The front cables melted through my grille, there was red and black melted plastic everywhere. TONS of white smoke. I also got 2nd degree burns/electrocuted myself trying to take the cables off :bad-word: I had to borrow a pair of leather gloves to get them off, and I left them there on fire. THe other guy took it pretty well though

Non SyTy...

I watched my Dad bump one of my bikes w/ a 4 wheeler and of course all of the bikes were lined up and on the sidestands.

BMW, ST1100, CBR600, Gold Wing, all doing the domino thingy.

My Dad immediately started crying and apologizing and I was raising Hell.

"Damnit Dad! What the F are you doing?! Have you lost your damned mind?! Look what you DID!!! The V-Max is still standing so stand them back up and get it right this time!!!":rotf:

We then got the Plastic Welding System out and downed the better part of a case of Bud Light while epoxying my scoots back together. Talk about bonding...

Re: So what's the most boneheaded thing you've done?

I dunno Adam....I might be in the running for the bonehead award. I was in a rush last fall and grabbed a battery from a buddies boat to chuck in the truck to quickly move it around the garage. I hooked it up, it gave a little spark, touched off the key and the truck gave a severe puff of smoke and burst into flames. :eyes: I hooked the battery up backward and when I did....all of the battery cables glowed red, caught a bunch of grease and crud on fire as flames shot out the top of the alternator and from behind the distributor.

Mind you...this is while the truck is sitting in my 35'x55' garage next to my black Ty, the 25' Mariah bow rider, and my wifes '04 Grand Cherokee. For anyone that has ever pushed your truck in neutral, its like pushing a dead cow out of the road. I'm struggling to push the flaming truck out of the garage by myself and finally get it into the driveway where if it burns to the ground, it'll only take itself, not my garage, house and other vehicles. This took all of about 2-3 minutes, and by then, things were pretty well engulfed on the engine-side. I had no hood on the truck, which also helped feed the fire.

I finally get the hose hooked up and put out the inferno. Assessing the damage revealed a done in alternator, ignition module and damn near every wire in the engine bay. This led to my rewiring project over the winter where I rebuilt the entire engine harness and a lot of the interior harness from schematics. I learned a lot, and it was pretty fun....

I have to be honest....for a split second, I thought about letting it burn to the ground and pissing on the ashes, but as a lover of all cars, I just couldn't let it happen. Also led to the naming of Christine for the truck. Can't kill it.

OMG Adam, I never realize that was why you were rewiring the engine compartment. I figured someone hacked your harness. Sorry to :rotf: but that sucks...
