I have a few myself

Lets see...i video-documented my knowledgeless ass trying to start my Ty after rebuilding it. Never plugged in the injector harness, so it wasn't getting any fuel for some reason. Then it wouldn't crank becuase the dist was about 90 degrees off. Finally it starts...and leaks a shitload of oil - i never installed the turbo oil drain line. So finally get that situated....go back to the truck a following weekend and it wouldn't start. I was stumped since nothing had changed since my last visit. Nothing except now not having enough gas in the tank, that is. Truck ran great on some 87 octane farm gas!

Fast forward to when i actually got my truck home. Time to change the oil. Nothing but Mobil 1 for me, right? Drained my thick first breakin oil...no metal - yay. Dump in 4.5qt of Mobil1. SHIT...didn't put the drain plug back in. Laugh at myself for wasting $35 in oil. Refill it w/ another 4.5qts, and thanksfully there is NONE on the floor! :woot: So i back the truck out of the garage to wash it. I looked forward and see yet another HUGE pile of oil. Shut the truck off right away. Well apparently you need to put an oil filter back on the truck :rotf: So after dumping $70 of mobil 1 all over my garage and said f it and dumped used most of a 5gal jug of synthetic penzoil i had laying around. Man i was pissed at myself that day - but not all that surprised at the same time.

Don't know if this qualifys as bone head but definatly as a bad day.
Got up at 2am to drive all the way down to Ohio to help a Maxima guy put a timing belt/waterpump on his car. Get that all fixed and head home about 3pm. Get a call from the wife that she's stuck at the mall (98 Jimmy) Turns over but no-start. We get part way through our conversation when my phone looses signal.
I start hurrying home in my Maxima. Passing some jerk going the speed limit :) I pop'd the head gasket at 11psi of boost. I'm talking James Bond smoke screen. I know my time is limited so I get to a gas station and I call my Dad to come get me. He takes me back to the shop and I pick up the Dually and trailer.. (9pm) Get all the way back to the pop'd headgasket Maxima.. Load it on the trailer... Get 15mi from home and blow a tire on the trailer.. ($h*T) It's getting home if I have to drag it there I thought...
Make it home.. (10mph) Unload Maxima.. Trade positions of tires and head to mall to pick up Dead Jimmy. Ratchet strap it up by my self (12:00am) Oh.. did I mention it was 0 degrees out?. That takes a hour to do 1am.... Drive 10mph all the way to the shop... Drop the fuel tank (which she just topped off before going to the mall. 3am... replace fuel pump.. Clean up and drive Jimmy home 4-5am... I've been up over 24hrs...
That was not a fun day...

:rotf: I want to see the documentary. :rotf: I did the forget oil pan plug in my wifes car, I didn't have any extra oil, her SUV was blocking the driveway and the rest of my cars, I had to walk 2 miles to get the stupid oil.

You guys make me feel good about my mistakes. Mine pale by comparison, my biggest bonehead move was when I first bought my Sy. This was my first turbo vehicle. I started doing the reliability mods (plugs, wires, cap/rotor/vacuum lines, FPR, O2 sensor, IC lines, etc) When I am finish I take the truck for a spin, it make like 1 psi of boost. I go out buy a Mity Vac. I recheck all my vacuum lines, Check Valves, read upand check out the wastegate operation, check all the sensor to make sure i didn't knock anything off. I forgot to tighten the IC to TB hose clamps.

Re: So what's the most boneheaded thing you've done?

I got my first Ty before I even knew this forum existed. Needless to say, I made many mistakes. The biggest one is that I kept the KB street chip in the truck. No need to explain as many of you know how that almost always ends up.

I dabbled for several months thereafter and failed to research mods before I did it. Again at the expense of much wasted time and money. In short, I never read before I wrenched.

Since then, my biggest dumbass mistake was replacing my distributor 180 degrees out.
The other was probably purchasing the $50 drilled and slotted rotors from JC Whitney. This is a true example of "you get what you pay for" and "if it sounds too good to be true...it probably is".

...other many lessons learned that most have probably done and more to come, I'm sure. Impatience ,shortcuts and igonorance ALWAYS come with a price. My word of advice would be "dream all you want but if you cant afford or dont know how to follow through 100%, dont even start. Rome wasnt built in a day".

I adjusted the B&M shift improver in the wrong direction, and toasted my tranny within 14 hours of owning my truck

Well, the new tranny will be getting the TCI shift controller, so that I can screw up my truck in an even more spectacular fashion. ;)

OMG Adam, I never realize that was why you were rewiring the engine compartment. I figured someone hacked your harness. Sorry to

but that sucks...
yeah....pretty much did. I went out to local mexican restaurant immediately afterward for a friends birthday and got loaded; ended up throwing up in my driveway next to the burned truck carcass.

All things considered, I was very lucky that A) the battery didn't blow up in my face and blind me, and B) that I got it out of the garage and put out before it took everything I owned. If the garage went, the house would definitely go as well. Losing 2200 feet of garage, 2200 feet of house, 2 typhoons, one grand cherokee, one dakota and one 25' Mariah boat would probably get me dropped by my insurance company. :rotf:

I backed into a Cedar tree pulling out of my grandparents garage, hit the corner of the bed and I lost some cladding in the process.

Brake Boosted in front of a cop w/ open DP and no airfilter, good thing my sister in law is the traffic prosicuting attorney for the city.

The first engine i ever built was a chevy 350. imagine that.
Anyhow, i forgot to install the spiro-locs with the floating wrist pins.
6 months pass and the truck starts to smoke real bad. I pull the heads and find eighth inch deep grooves in all the cylinders!
Inexperience speaks for itself.

Re: So what's the most boneheaded thing you've done?

Non sy/ty - One day while trying to accomplish a "very complicated" 3 point turnaround manuever in my '88 blazer (precursor to Typhoon addiction) in a driveway that gets thinner everytime I tell the story, I stepped on the gas instead of the brake and backed into a basketball pole denting the bumber and causing the adjustable backboard to come down and chip the back fin and hatch glass.

Sy/Ty - In recently taking apart my Ty to repair the turbo coolant return line (how the hell do you get to that bolt on the side of the turbo!) noticed all 3 bolts for the CAC missing. Must be more than a year they have been gone. I assume they ALL vibrated loose because I would never forget to screw them back in!

Sy/Ty - While out on a date I was at her parents house about to leave and I watch her ass brother back his car into the rear driverside corner cladding and run up it. I wanted to explode but I figure that might be bad in front of the parents. He says to not bother with insurance beacuse he has a friend who works in the body of shop of a ford dealership. I take it over there, he looks at and I can tell he has never even seen a Typhoon. Writes the VIN down and says he will look for the part. After 2 months of no contact or returned calls I have reached my end and go over there. I ask for him but he is at lunch and I blow up in the office and get kicked it out. So I am one of the many that needs the rear driverside corner cladding. I drive by that place all the time and want to go in there with a bat!! Luckily, I now know a kindly Typhoon/Speedshop owner in the northern Indiana area who has offered to help repair the cladding for me.

Non sy/ty - While driving down a highway at 65mph I go to shift my Tahoe from D to OD (column shifter) with my left hand. Not easy. My right hand was busy holding my girlfriend's hand so it would have made NO sense to let go for 2 seconds to shift. I smart man and use left hand. I go from D past N past OD to R. Truck squeals to a stop leaving rubber and stalls. I panic and hit the gas to pull over not realizing the truck has stalled into neutral. Luckily a semi was not behind me or we would be pancakes. Thankfully trannies disengage when a stupid person does a stupid thing.
