Justin's using a Megasquirt-I (version 3.0 PCB) that was assembled by my buddy Jerry at DIYautotune.com. He's pretty much the only supplier of MS units and accessories who keeps them in stock for fast turnaround, he's an MS user himself, and he's building an archive of "HOWTOs" for different motors. I invited him to lurk in this thread so he can take a copy of what Justin develops and keep it for anyone who asks him about MSing a Syclone or Typhoon in the future - if thats cool with you guys.

This is Jerry from DIYAutoTune.com lurking as requested! This looks like a fun project-- and you've definitely got the right guy (Scott) working on it with you. As he mentioned Scott and I have been working together to get some install documents for different vehicles put together, there's ALOT of people that have worked out solutions for different vehicles but they've never been clearly documented and brought together to one place, we're going to try and change that. If there's anything I can do to help make this install go smoothly just let me know. I'm also not to bad at technical documentation so I can give the doc a look-over/proofread, whatever. When the doc is completed if I can host a copy of it that would be great, and I'll gladly give credit where credit is due. I can link people back here to the SyTy forums to say thanks...

Nice move, Sorry I am a little late to the party, but I always wondered how MegaSquirt would do on a SyTy, I figuired it would be easy enough to do, and it appears you are doing a quality install/swap. I hope things go smoothly.. Keep us posted.

Re: Squirt Squirt: The "How To MegaSquirt your SyTy" Thread

A quick update.

Scott and I took the truck out late last night for a quick spin. She runs like a champ. The idle speed is right at 750rpm. With the MS there are 0 hiccups at idle. The stock PSM would miss quite a bit at idle (not to mention it idled at 600rpm). The IAC works flawlessly. Turning on the AC has 0 effect and putting it in gear cause the idle speed to drop only a hair. It?s still VERY smooth.

We still need to install the LC-1 wideband so we used my LM-1 portable unit in the tail pipe for some preliminary tuning. We did some very mild driving (tried to stay out of boost) as we still need to determine how much ignition advance we can run with out pinging problems.

Speaking of that, the KnocksenseMS is badass. Scott has it set to the most sensitive setting so it is picking up all sorts of noise just like the factory PCM did. It piggybacks the knock signal on the coolant temp signal so the MS displays a brief spike in coolant temp when the Knocksense picks up knock from the sensor. No wonder my truck pulled so much timing at the track with the stock PCM. The Knocksense also comes with an LED which we mounted on the pillar pod. We will have to carefully play with the sensitivity of the KnocksenseMS to determine when the truck is actually experiencing knock conditions.

The one hitch we ran into last night occurred when we got back. I shut the truck off. When I went to start it, the PCM wasn?t sharing the tach signal properly with the MS unit. We had this problem a few days ago when we first fired the truck on MS. Scott thinks there is something different going on with the HEI module when the truck is warmed up. We?ll hook it to an oscilloscope this afternoon to see what?s up. Naturally, he already has a couple of ideas to work around this.

I did have a couple of requests of any SyTy guy that is interested in this.

Do any of you guys know how the ignition advance is supposed to progress with engine RPM and boost for a stock truck? An actual table would be best, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

How much total advance does a stock SyTy get?

I have some DataMaster logs, but my knock sensor has been spoiling the fun.

If you guys have any timing info, please shoot me a PM.

total advance depends on coolant temp, boost, rpm, load, mat temp, heads, and such. usually no more than 15 deg@14psi on stock heads.

stockers normally run 20ish deg at idle and come down as the load/boost comes up. we also have extra timing when you jump into the throttle. and the less the boost the more the timing and as boost goes up timing goes down.

Re: Squirt Squirt: The "How To MegaSquirt your SyTy" Thread

Awesome. Thanks for the input, guys. Leroy, you rock.

Scott thinks he found the problem last night. We had a jumper wire (a mod needed to make MS work with GM HEI) grounding on the case of the MS. This was causing a messed up square wave for the tach signal (one corner looked rounded on the oscilloscope). At times, it was enough to keep the MS from getting a usable tach signal.

Anyway, these timing tables will be very useful in dialing in the truck. Thanks again. Hopefully we?ll be tuning with the MS wideband tonight.

This is killer. I'm really happy to see this happening.

Keep up the great work!

is there some reason why you don't use MS to control your IAC or does it not have the ability?

Re: Squirt Squirt: The "How To MegaSquirt your SyTy" Thread

MS-II has the provisions for a GM style stepper motor IAC. An MS-II would definitely be the way to go if a guy wanted to do away with the stock computer all together. However, I've heard it (or the software anyway) is still a bit buggy. Scott seems more comfortable with the original MS. It saves me a few bucks too.

As is, the MS and factory computer seem to be very happy doing what they are each assigned to do. I think I'll probably be a guinea pig for an MS-II install on my ?67 Cougar, if Scott is willing. For now, I wanted an EMS that has proven to be reliable and perform. MS more than fit the bill.

Re: Squirt Squirt: The "How To MegaSquirt your SyTy" Thread

Success!

It looks like it's been a week since I posted, but we got the HEI bug worked out. The board we were using apparently had a bad tach circuit. Scott built another MS v3 board and tried it after I let it warm up on the original PCM.

Before, when the truck was up to temp, the MS would act like it wasn?t getting a tach signal. And when it did get one, it wasn?t a nice square 5v wave. Now it works like a champ.

All we have tuned thus far is the cold start and idle. Since it is currently colder than f*#k out right now in Omaha, this should be a very good tune.

We still need to calibrate the LC-1 and the KnocksenseMS sensitivity.

We?ll be tuning more hopefully on Thursday. The tune we?ll make should be good for a stock to near stock truck running boost pressures up to 21.5psi. We?ll be shooting for 12:1 AF max under WOT conditions.

I?m really stoked to see what this truck can do with full ignition advance at WOT and upwards of 21psi. So far, it?s gone 13.56 with very little timing and stock boost.

I?m currently gathering all of the documentation we used for the install. When all is said and done (maybe a few weeks out with Christmas coming up), I?ll post a link to a webpage with all of the pictures I took of the install, a detailed write-up proofread by MegaScott (dieselgeek) and Jerry at http://diyautotune.com/, and all of the MegaSquirt files/firmware (including some solid tunes for a near stock truck) needed to squirt your own truck.

I know we ran into a few more snags then anticipated (mostly due to a bad board). But I hope my experience doesn?t prevent anyone else from squirting their truck. This little box is WAY more powerful than any aftermarket SyTy ?chip? and offers nearly unlimited tuneablity. And for the DIYer, a basic squirt install (I went a little overboard on mine with the wideband and such) can be done for about the price of a ?chip?.

Anyway, I?ll post more once we get the tune dialed in.

I can't wait to find out how to do this and 86 the cap/rotor/IGN module. I'm suck and tired of changing that crap out like every other month. It's enough to make me want to sell the truck.

I?ve only done it once thus far in my truck, but I feel your pain. I do NOT like jacking with the cap and rotor. I don?t plan on making it an annual activity. If possible, I?d also like to make the truck run well enough that I don?t have to change the plugs annually either.

The MS is step one. A Ford EDIS wasted spark system to 86 the distributor system is step two. I?d like to make a detailed write-up for both though, as some people may not want to mess with the EDIS portion of our project.

Re: Squirt Squirt: The "How To MegaSquirt your SyTy" Thread

Sorry for the lack of updates. I've gotten a little sidetracked with some computer projects and the holidays.

As of today, the beast runs and has VE tables built to 10psi. Scott thinks I have a bad restriction in my exhaust (I have no cat but I do have badly rotted mufflers) as the VE flat-lines above 3000rpm. Maybe it's just the nature of the beast when it comes to stock cam, heads and exhuast.

We still need to tweak the acceleration enrichment and cold start enrichment. We?re helping a friend turbocharge and MegaSquirt a ?73 Bug today (all that is left is tuning), so hopefully we?ll be back on the Syclone later today or tomorrow. Sorry this has been taking so long.

Justin, Can we expect any updates on your project in the near future. A lot
of people are really interested in this. I've already built my Megasquirt
and will install it on my own if necessary but would be much easier if we
could share information.
