Re: Squirt Squirt: The "How To MegaSquirt your SyTy" Thread

Sorry for the lack of updates.

I've been driving the truck on MS for a couple of months now. For the most part, it works great. I just didn't want to post a write-up until all the bugs are worked out.

I had some iginition issues but eventually found out it was bad plugs (after the only 8k miles I've put on this truck since I bought it).

We are also having a heck of a time getting the KnocksenseMS to work with the Syclone knock sensor. The guy that created the Knocksense unit is currently researching the issue. For now, I'm going to tune the truck to be safe without a knock sensor. And no, I don't plan on repeating what KenneBell did with their chip.

To be honest, I've never tuned an EFI car before. But I can say that tuning with MegaTune is quite straightforward. The biggest challenge I've had is finding the right cold-start cranking pulsewidth for the injectors. If you don't get it right the first try, you have to let it run and then cool down again for a couple of hours. Once I get it down, I'm going to share all of this.

I've had some difficulty making my schedule work with Scott (the MS installer/tuner) so that's why this has been so protracted. But we are meeting up this Friday. I'll try and post some pictures at the very least over the next couple of days.

Even if we don't have it 100%, I'll share the info on the MS install (firmware version, MegaTune version, basic wiring schematic, etc) in the nex few days.

Again, sorry this has taken so long. But believe me, it is well worth the wait.

Re: Squirt Squirt: The "How To MegaSquirt your SyTy" Thread

Here are a few pictures for starters.

This is probably the most important thing for a trouble free install (as as close to one as possible anyway):

This is a power and ground distribution block for the MS unit, LC-1 wideband O2 sensor and the gauges we installed. I mounted it unit the carpet on the passneger side dash area but you can mount it anywhere that is dry and will keep it from being damaged. The trim will cover it up and prevent anyone from kicking it with their feet.

The wires on the left (vertical row) feed into a relay (Scott knows how to find the good ones at the bone yard) and draw current straight from the positive battery terminal.

The wires on the right (horizontal) are ground wires for the MS, sensors, etc and run straight to the negative battery terminal.

Per Scott, if you are running new wire for the MS, DO THIS. It will prevent many potential headaches down the road. Everthing will see the same ground.

Another option is to remove the PCM all together and use that wiring instead. Just make sure you have good clean grounds.

Re: Squirt Squirt: The "How To MegaSquirt your SyTy" Thread

Not much here.

Wanting to avoid drilling into this truck as much as possible, I decided to mount the MS behind the passenger side seat back (with heavy duty adhesive) to have easy access to it (the serial port and LED diagostic lights) and still conceal it.

The carpet went right back over the board and the MS screws into the wood. It has worked out very nicely. If need be, I can simply remove the MS, and no one would be the wiser that it was ever there.

I'll grab a picture of it mounted in a day ro two. I think it looks great.

Uhg. Ok. So I had to drill a hole. Here it is.

This hole allows the new MS sensor wires, distribution block wires, and MAP sensor line to run out to the engine bay.

This spot (damn near right under the brake pedal) seemed the best to me for a couple of reasons:
1) Being under a pedal, the wires and line running through it won't get smashed by feet (the pedal doesn't come anywhere near touching it)
2) It is well away from hot objects on the other side of the firewall
3) I could get at it with a regular power drill

Yeah, it kind of looks ghetto (I still had the tag on it) in this picture, but it cleaned up well and works great. Once the intercooler is on, you can't see any of it.

This is a new coolant temperature sensor spliced into a heater line. It is necessary if you want to retain the stock PCM for IAC functionality (you can?t share the coolant sensor with two computers.

What I did was move the wiring (PCM wiring) from the original coolant temp sensor to the new coolant temp sensor shown in this picture. The MS has new wire run from its sensor (the original one by the thermostat housing) through the firewall back to the MS unit.

I put the MS on that one because I thought it would react quicker and the MS coolant temp sensor is higher in priorty now. I don?t know how often water flows though the heater core when the heater isn?t on.

Maybe it doesn't matter which one goes where. They both seem happy as is.

Re: Squirt Squirt: The "How To MegaSquirt your SyTy" Thread

Here are some very minor intake sensor mods.

Like the coolant temp sensor, to run both the PCM and MS at the same time you?ll need two charge air temp sensors.

I removed the vacuum fitting on the back of the intake and installed a second sensor there. The MS uses that one.

All of the relocated vacuum lines (MS 2.5 Bar MAP, stock MAP, AFPR, boost gauge) now run off of the new vacuum port fitting I bought (replaces the brake booster fitting with a new one with more ports).

The arrangement looks ghetto to me, but it is only temporary. I am going to get an aluminum vacuum block and clean the lines up with that.

Ghetto or not, it works flawlessly if the truck is running MS-PCM or in a bone stock (PCM only) configuration.

Re: Squirt Squirt: The "How To MegaSquirt your SyTy" Thread

Here is a picture of the new MAP line for the MS unit.

It runs from the vacuum port fitting ALLLL the way through the firewall, under the carpet, around the driver seat and back to the passenger side where the MS is installed.

One would think such a long run would be laggy and in accurate, but surprisingly it is not. The reason is because the copper capillary tube has a very thin inner diameter. Going from boost to vacuum and back requires very little air movement in such a small volume.

The copper tubing is also much more rugged than the plastic stuff boost gauges come with. Also, it?s bendable and will retain its shape (gotta love those coils of clear plastic boost gauge tubing).

I'll show later how we integrated this in with the new wiring harness. It looks very clean in that it can't be seen at all.

Re: Squirt Squirt: The "How To MegaSquirt your SyTy" Thread

Here is some of Scott and Mike's handy work.

They made me this wiring harness to quickly change between the MS-PCM and PCM. What this is is all of the PCM wires we had to cut (injector wires, etc) and run to the MS unit put into a nice Molex style 12-pin connector.

With this, I can fully reconnect the truck to the stock computer in a minute at most.

This was very handy troubleshooting my ignition problems. We found out it was fouled plugs causing a misfire (and not the MS unit) because it was missing while running on the PCM as well with the MS.

Later I?ll post a detailed wiring diagram to show just what is inside that nicely wrapped harness (good work, Mike).

Re: Squirt Squirt: The "How To MegaSquirt your SyTy" Thread

This is the other end of the wiring harness before it got wrapped.

I?ll post a better picture in a day or two to show the finished product.

It runs underneath the passenger seat and pops up from under the carpet right behind the center console so as to allow the spare tire assembly to go back into place.

Well, I hope this is good enough for now. I have to go to bed. I'll post more soon.

It's like a 'do-it-yourself' AEM is the best way to describe it. A lot more hands on but a fraction of the price as well.

Like Jer said, it's a fully programmable stand alone engine management system.

The hardware is around $330 though I have a few more bells and whistles in my install ($200 LC-1 wideband, several gauges and a $70 KnockSenseMS knock sensor controller).

The biggest draw back with MS is one is typically on his own for tech support. Luckily, I have an MS guru who lives in town and likes my truck.

Re: Squirt Squirt: The "How To MegaSquirt your SyTy" Thread

W00t! More pictures and a much better running truck!

Doesn't look like much, at least that's what I was shooting for.

Here it is in all of its glory. MegaSquirt (v3 board). The cable on top is a 9-pin serial cable for interfacing with a laptop (for both datalogging and programming).

The bottom cable (37-pin) goes to the truck's wiring harness to fire the injectors and plugs.

The black hose next to the bottom cable is the line for the integral 2.5 Bar MAP sensor inside the MegaSquirt. It's a long run to the engine, but there is surprisingly little lag.

That's where the MS wiring meets the truck harness. I haven't put everything back together yet, as I still need access to the KnockSenseMS (under the carpet) for troubleshooting.

The wire on the left is an interior light. The one on the right is connected to the stock PCM. I can unplug a wire not shown into that wire for stock truck functionality.

Re: Squirt Squirt: The "How To MegaSquirt your SyTy" Thread

Well, tonight Scotty and I did some more tuning.

I tried a few WOT runs after Scott (the MegaSquirt guru) built up the fuel tables as I drove. Blessed with cool weather, the truck seems very happy at 10? up top at 15.5psig.

We are flying blind with regard to the knock sensor for now (I've replaced it, but it still hears all sorts of false knock so it is disabled in MS for now) so I want to be very safe. My ultimate goal is to have a knock free tune but still have a fully functional knock sensor just in case.

I do need a TON more timing down low as this thing is a slug out of the hole compared the the stock PCM. I think I'll use my DM logged data and build up the bottom part of the table off of that.

Things are looking up. Assuming Scott and I can get together a few more times over the next week or two, I should have a complete write-up (FINALLY) very soon.

I'll post all the finalized pieces (maps, software, firmware, etc) as they are completed.

Later,
JL

MegaTune is the application for tuning. D epending on what version firmware is in the MegaSquirt, you'll need the proper version of MegaTune.

Currently, I am using MegaTune 2.25b717 beta for tuning.

Here is a link to the MegaSquirt Forum:

http://www.msefi.com

Here's a link to the MegaSquirt 'n Spark (the specific MegaSquirt for our trucks) downloads page:

http://megasquirt.sourceforge.net/extra/index.html

It's a little confusing at first which version of MegaTune works with which verison of MegaSquirt 'n' Spark. They are working on simplifying this in the near future.

When I have all of my documentation together, I will provide answers to all of this stuff.
