Re: step by step LS1 brakes how to install with pics

I've been looking into doing the disc conversion to the rear and now that my rear end blew apart now is the time. What donor did you use for the brackets, calipers, rotors and such?

I would not worrie about nothing getting in there, But if your that worried about it weld the hole closed.

The sensors are there already. I just didn't want to grind on the axle housing to make them fit because I'm deleting abs anyway. I'll just pull them out and see what I can come up with. I'm not really concerned about water or snow in there becuse I don't plan on driving in the rain and never snow. I was worried about pebbles and road crap mainly. Thanks for your help...Jim

All LS1 camaro stuff. V6 or V8 car does not matter. Like "98" Camaro

Thats what I figured, I was calling around for 98-2002 cars in the salvage yards. Thanks again for the write up, I will be doing mine on Monday.

Guys, I cannot locate the exact info right now, but I am sure that V6 vs. V8 DOES matter. That's why it is called a "LS1" brake conversion, and not a "4th gen F-body" brake conversion. I found a few sites that do say the V8 brakes are "bigger", but not the specific info. Check online auto parts for disc rotor and caliper part numbers or application data. I am sure you will find that the part numbers for V6 vs. LS1 brake parts are different.

No. Every 1998 through 2002 Camaro or Firebird have the same brakes. V6 or V8 car, doesn't matter. V6 cars came with the same 16" wheels as Z28's. SS's came with both the 17" zr1 style, and the 10 spoke 17" wheels in the later years. The 35th anny wheels being the blacked out version of the 10 spoke.

There was no factory option for larger brakes for the cars.

SLP, or GMMG(company that did the zl1 cars) might have offered an aftermarket option for brakes, but I'm sure you had to special order that and it would have cost a ton, just like their sus kits. But even then I doubt they offered a larger brake kit.

I checked with autozone for new calipers, rotors, pads and hoses and the part numbers are identical for V6 vs SS and Z28. I'm going to snag up as much as I can from the junkyard because the new calipers have a $30 core charge each.

Re: step by step LS1 brakes how to install with pics

how about someone trying to retain abs with these rear brakes? i don't have the backing plates with sensors so i don't know what they look like but does anyone think that either the stock sy or 92 ty rear sensors could be adapted to the f-body backing plates? or could the f-body sensors be reused, i am sure the plugs are different.

i am trying to retain abs and this is the final step i am stuck on, getting the rear sensors on and working,.

IF i could use the backing plates from a car that had the rear sensors i would be more than willing to trade someone for my non abs sensor backing plates. if i have to build a bracket or modify the backing plates i will just reuse the ones i have.

FYI my sy's rear abs sensors have already been taken out, so i have no idea what they even look like

Got pics?

Found pics of my 2WD rear LS1 conversion & park brake bracket I made last summer.

Cut the very end of the factory bracket off. Welded it to a piece of 1/8" flat stock with a overhang to the side of the leafs. Sandwiched it between leaf & lowering block. Used the LS1 inside cable put into my stock cable housing for length. Crimpped a new barrel connector to inside & attached to rest of cabling. Work great.

Minor additions:
The stock LS1 e-brake brackets can be modified to mount to the spring perch, cheap alternative.

NAPA sells an adapter for $2 that will adapt between the 2 flare types.

FWIW: the photo for step 9 shows the drum backing plate, not the LS1 plate.

sorry to bump an old thread, but does anyone know the sizes I need for the adapter of the brake lines?

I did a few posts in my "sy2373 ramblings" thread where I shared some info about my LS brake swap. I went with new lines and included the lengths needed. This was for a syclone, but the brake line info should be the same, I think.

When I did the swap I was not aware that fitting were needed so when I was done I just connected the hose to line to get by and be able to move it around. That was six months ago and I have not had any problems without them. :2cents:

Step 4 remove the axles
Make sure they go back on the same side when installing them later. ( there different lenghts )

Is there a way to tell which axle goes on which side? Measurement or marking? I took mine out and forgot to keep track of what side they go back in.
