there is more than 1 and I doubt you could find the right one. drill it and get some allen head bolts to hold it on and get some real wheel locks to put under the covers.

Re: stock wheels locking nut

you can use a flat head screw driver to get them off rather than drill them out.. I had the same problem I lost my key so I bought 4 new locks and a key cost me a 100 bucks...

Just a FYI, thread size is 10mm X 1.50, length 1.30" and head diameter on the locks is .620".

Re: stock wheels locking nut

thanks guys.

as far as drilling it goes - what about the bolt that the nut actually goes on? Last time I drilled it, the bolt was savaged, or does that just mean I need to be careful?

Ideally I want to be able to replace only the 4 locking nuts. If I go the allen key route, then I need 20 locking nuts!!!

On the two damaged wheels, what do I meed to do to get the bolts fixed? Cut them off, then redrill and then tap in a counterthreaded bolt? Or will there be a professional wheel repairer that can do that?

Thanks for the help!

Re: stock wheels locking nut

Okay, I think I get what your saying now. Its not the centercap bolts that are giving you grief, its the actual lugnuts. I dont really know any way to get the locking nuts off, short of carefully cutting them lengthwise, or having a new key made. As for the damaged studs, you can buy replacement ones for the hub. They slide in from the back and arent too much of an issue.:2cents:

Find a cheap socket about the size of the inner diameter of the 'lock area' ... basically the area the "key" fits into and just pound it in with a BFH (big friggen hammer). It'll basically fuse the two together, then just put the ratchet on and you're set. It usually destroys the new socket and the wheel lock, but it gets them off. Theives don't do it because it's loud and usually takes a little time to pound it solidly enough to stick them together. It's worked for my brother before.

Edit: Assuming your talking about "wheel lock" lug nuts, here's what I was talking about:

Re: stock wheels locking nut

Sometimes you can get a socket to fit over the entire locking nut too.(not in the key pattern) Same method, hammer it on and use a big ratchet. This is what I did and it worked great. I think it was a 16pt 13/16" that I used but could be wrong. Be sure to hammer it back off once it's loose.

Yeah, just depends on the style. My brother bought a truck with two sets of lock nuts, no keys cause the previous owner couldn't find them. One set had to go inside, one set outside  it was a long afternoon just trying to get them off all 4 wheels.

Re: stock wheels locking nut

basically, this is what I am trying to avoid...

Is that easy to fix?

Thanks for the input all - I especially like the bfh technique!! Now to find a disposable socket..Can you use it on more than one locking nut?

A set of Vise grips should solve your problem in that pic. Looks like a little rust on the lugnuts, maybe add some penetrant and then some "pipe dope" to the new bolts. Once you get all 4 of those key locks off, I would throw them as far away from your truck as possible. I changed mine to the standard hex as the keys strip very easy. Within a few months of that I had different wheels anyways. Good luck!

Re: stock wheels locking nut

no...

the nuts come off fine. Itis the damaged bolt that I had to drill into to get the locking nut off that is the problem.

Can I fix that?

I am looking at some C5 wheels anyway .. maybe Z06s at some point instead?

Re: stock wheels locking nut

It looks like there's enough bolt still there to get a Vise grip onto. Have you tried it? I meant overall with the little bit of rust seen before you install the new bolt.

Re: stock wheels locking nut

ok, so i tried to drill it and guess what - the F*****G drill snapped in the hole.

I am going to get either a biger drill or am going to spot weld a crowbar onto the nut and get it off like that.

Thank goodness I haven't had a puncture yet.....(tempting fate or what)

So basically I have one remaining stock wheel locking nut. Looks like I will end up drilling that as well.

As far as the ones that I have removed go , there is a bolt that has no head on it that goes into the wheel, and is what the locking nut is secured onto. Where can I get replacements so that I can use the stock wheels and centre caps along with NEW locking nuts?

thanks,

Mark
