Sy body swap has commenced!

Well, I finally said screw it and decided to go ahead with swapping my blue body onto my second truck's working drivetrain. I've slated 3 weeks for this project, but I'm pretty sure it's not going to take that long (famous last words).

DAY 1:
Had shell towed to friend's back yard. His neighbor's got horses! Yay! :( Smelly fly-attracting bastards. Who'd have thought you can have corrals in the middle of Scottsdale. I feel like I'm working at littleblackpsycho's house again (were I was constantly being attacked by random farm animals while working on his Sy).

Day1a.jpg

Luckily I ingeniously rigged my blue truck together with nothing but zip ties and bungee cords. It allowed for an effortless F1-style teardown. ;) I had every body panel and cladding piece off the truck in literally 5 minutes. It was quite impressive to watch, I should have video taped it. :) The body and bed were unbolted from the frame almost as easily. Here's the truck about 20 minutes after I parked it.

Day1b.jpg

I laid everything out carefully and covered it to keep anything from damaging the parts. They already had a crap ton of dust on them anyways. Oh well, I still have to take the truck to the painter when i'm done for buffing and some repainting, so I'm not too worried about dust/scratches so much.

Random cladding shots...

Day1d.jpg

So after the quick teardown it was back home to start getting the black truck as torn-down as possible but still be able to drive it. I ripped the passenger seat out and took the door panels out before calling it a day...

DAY 2:

I continued on the teardown of the black truck. I started with the front and took off the fender cladding, bumper cover, and grill cover. I loosely put the grill cover back on just for looks...

Day1e.jpg

Since I'd gone through the dashes of these trucks a bajillion times, taking out the dash went very smoothly. Most importantly, the truck still ran fine with it out. :)

Day2b.jpg

Just a quick shot while driving. I'm sure that if I really wanted to, I could have shorted out a few contacts and blown in the right air tubes to get A/C to come out of this hose and cool me down, but I figured it wasn't worth the time. ;)

Day2c.jpg

I pulled the truck next to the shell and spent a few minutes planning the order of events to make this a success...

Day2d.jpg

Here's the final resting place of thr trucks. With any luck, the next time the black truck moves, it won't be black anymore...

...TO BE CONTINUED WHEN I GET ANOTHER DAY OFF WORK...

Can you give me the Cliff Notes on why you're doing this swap? Just curious......

Well, I've known Brandon as long as he's had this project going on.

The blue truck was his first Syclone. When I met him, it was black, and had a few tranny issues, but it ran.

He tore it down to turn it into a drag only truck (twin turbo Bowtie V6 or V8)

He sold pretty much everything and was left with a shell.

Time passes, the project begins to seem bigger and bigger.

He got a smokin deal on his 2nd Sy. It runs.

The blue one looks great...but it just a shell....

The black one runs and is intact.....but the body/paint leaves a lot to be desired.

So it's just to get the best of both worlds I believe. A good looking, running Sy.

Truckless. For now.

I didn't think you could have both. :rotf: I thought you had to pick one or the other when you buy one of these trucks. :rotf:

Got pics of the blue one clean? Looks like a sweet color.

DAY 4:

Continued teardown. Luckily I had help. Nick (nick041881) showed up and we just started ripping everything off that appeared to be connected to the cab. Nick decided to break the heater box instead of undo an unseen bolt. Luckily I have a spare. Here's an inside view after we took the ECU out.
Day3a.jpg

Onward to removal of hood, fenders, etc. etc... This was extremely easy and went very quickly.
Day3b.jpg

Time for bed removal. I've taken my bed off tons of times in the past using myself and a friend, but that was before the hard tonneau was there. That added a ton of weight, so 3 people were needed to move it.
Day3c.jpg

What appears as a horrid rats nest of crap is actually pretty easy to sort out. When it gets down to it, there really isn't that many wires in our trucks. At least that many that are required to make it run. I was tempted to plug the ECU into the harness, hold it above the motor, and start the truck, but I wanted to get more done... P.S. If anyone wants the crappy battery relocate box thing you see in the photo let me know. It's a royal PITA having the battery down there, but that's the way I got it. Battery is going where all batteries belong, in the bed!
Day3d.jpg

We went ahead and pulled off the other bed and set it aside...
Day3e.jpg

Quick shot of the bedless trucks. I took my pressure washer to the bed of the black one to get most of the crud. I'm going to throw some paint on it, or that POR stuff..
Day3f.jpg

Pulled the trucks one behind the other to make the cab swap easier. The plan is to lift off the cabs, moving them as little as possible, and shuffling the frames around underneath them. This course of action is still tentative, as I am researching the best way to lift these cabs. They're very front-heavy, kind of like a tube television. I'll be heading out to the local REI to grab a bunch of heavy-duty climbing rope to rig these cabs up with...

Next update will be next Tuesday unless I decide to call in sick to work a couple days. I just might. ;)

That's looks like a fun project. I would love to help someone with the entire project like this. I have pulled and installed a few motors and trans' but to do it all would be a great learning expierence. The offer is out there for local SyTyers.Good luck with the project and keep us up to date.

Wouldn't it have been easier and possibly less work just to swap out the drivetrain instead?

In short-answer form...no.

We threw the drivetrain swap idea around a lot, but due to everything I wanted on the black truck, it would have ended up as more work in the long run. A lot of the parts in the black truck are new (steering arm, ZQ8 box, new steering linkages, new front diff, new halfshafts, new ball joints, new front diff, etc.) so I'd have to swap all of that as well. In addition to swapping the motor, I'm also swapping the entire interior of the truck.

Another stipulation that I was held to was that there were to be as little fluids as possible. Being it that I tend to make giant messes when doing motor/tranny swaps, a drivetrain swap was pretty much not an option.

I'm trying to figure out why you don't take the doors off before you move the cabs. I worked in a body shop for a few years. Doors are pretty damn heavy.Try using some 2x4's and wooden crates(maybe milk crates if you trust them). Block the cabs up. It takes some time but once they are at the right height a coupe of bud's can move them no problem.Just my .02 cents.

Day 4:

Put the trucks up on concrete so we could wheel around the cabs with the lift. I rented a 1000-lb. 10-ft. material lift for $60/day (it's due back at 3 tomorrow). I then tied up the front part with some climbing rope. It worked brilliantly. It took about 5 minutes to raise the cab and move it to where it is now. After the cab came off it was time to get out the power washer and blast the years of dirt and grime away before sanding and painting the frame. That will all take place tomorrow morning, since it took way too long to find paint.

Sorry the pix suck ass, at the time I didn't realize the white balance was set funky on the camera. More to come tomorrow!

Nice job.

I'm assuming the water on the ground means you cleaned up the frame a little?? :rotf:
