I did this mod to my bud's syclone as well as my own and it has performed flawlessly for over two years now. We were both having the dreaded hot start problems and after eliminating the purple wire, both our trucks have started fine. Both of us DID NOT replace the starter, we continued to use the SAME ONE that wasn't working before the mod. Removing the purple wire from the equation fixed the problem in both our cases. HTH's

Re: The Purple wire

i did the same on mine and its been good for the past 3 years. i was also thinking about seeing if a high torque starter from a 95 Z-71 would fit. my brother has one in his and that bitch is quick as fock.cool part is it has that little supercharger sound to it. lol

I made them for myself and a bud of mine.

Re: The Purple wire

The purple wire is in the stock wiring harness above the brake booster. Look for the biggest purple wire in there and that's it. A remote solenoid kit from summit will have the schematics and directions to hook everything up.

Re: The Purple wire

Its like a 12awg wire. You cant miss it. I used the 1996 454 starter setup and I love it. Much smalller then stock and it comes out easy. For some reason you cant use the remote solinoid on it because it holds it out to long. I just used a peice of #12 silicone wire down to my starter.

Re: The Purple wire

My ususal rant on this fix follows, but this is just me chiming in on this issue.

 Although workable, I would disagree with this system. If, and this is a big if, the starter itself is ok then the copper link is unnecessary. What you’re really trying to do is send full battery voltage to the starter solenoid without the resistance/voltage-drop of the key switch. (The starter itself already has full voltage because of the bat cable attached to it.) So, change, replace, whatever the purple wire only. Using the key to activate a solenoid that, in turn, independently sends full bat voltage to the starter solenoid is the only “correct” fix.

Even though some people use this method and it seems to work for them I agree with Don 100% on this. I wouldn't put ANOTHER solenoid in the setup, you already have one attached to the starter, upgrade your wire to something bigger and try to isolate it from the heat.

Re: The Purple wire

Go to a Hobby store that sells RC cars. In most of them you can buy 12awg silicone covered wire. The stuff is great for the heat. Its not cheap but its a one time fix. Then just tie wrap it away from the DP.

Re: The Purple wire

I thought I had put my hands on every square inch of this truck until I tried to get to the purple wire nut. Has anyone ever replaced the purple wire and connector with the starter still on the truck? I can barely get my fingers on it but can find a socket to fit. Anyone know what size it is?

And how much trouble is it to pull the starter just to change the purple wire?

I'm thinknig about just splicing into the purple wire as close to the starter as possible and routing the new wire back to the loom above the brake booster. How does that sound?
