Things Mountains Can Do To Your Truck

Me and my wife went on a very nice little get away trip last weekend up in the Mountains. Were already at 6,000ft. elev. in Colorado Springs. On the second day of our trip we proceeded to the mountains all the way up in the 9-100ft. range. We went to a place called Winter park which is at the base of a mountain cluster that you have to drive up to get there. On the way up, it was about a 30 minute drive and the tranny temps were holding steady at a squishy warm 248*. I was a nervous wreck the whole time, kinda makes me think I shouldve never hooked the damn thing up. 5 minutes of the downhill slide were nice, brought my temps down to 180*. So moving right along, the truck felt sluggish as a beat up truck with four flat tires. You could definately feel the altitude choking the crap out of it. The BOV sounded waaay different. Instead of a long soothing ppsssssssshhhhhh!!!!!! it was reduced to gay wet fart sound psstt! I was pleased to see that my brakes held up well the entire time as they are all new. Next thing I noticed is htat even though we drove on paved roads, the back of my truck was constantly caked with dirt. Roads seemed clean to me but I guess looks can be decieving. Last thing I took note of was that not a lot of people looked like htey had ever seen a SYTY before and underestimated the fact that a POS Blazer could pass em like they were standing still on the highway.

Are you familiar with the new data center Progressive Ins. has built there? I'm not real familiar with the area but I do know its in Colorado Springs and you can see Pike's Peak from out the window there.

Well anyways, I may be taking a position at this new data center which means Colorado may see 2 more trucks added to the clan! I have an interview next Wed. with the hiring manager and we are going to discuss my options and i'm really considering moving! I'll be sure to let you guys know the outcome though and maybe we can hookup if I come do a site visit in the next couple weeks! :D

how mad would you be if I painted my Ty the same color as your Sy when it comes time to repaint? :rotf: j/k. I love your Sy and wouldn't want to copy it.... although, it would make a nice cladding color when I need to redo my cladding.

Keep us updated. With all the trucks that have left CO, it'll be good to get some back.

I wouldn't be too upset.... its the all gray Ty overseas that really got me wanting to paint it this color in the first place. Plus, don't they say its a form of flattery? ;) :rotf:

I'd really like to hit you guys up when the house hunting starts. I want to get as close to the data center as possible and not live in a ghetto! I'd just be asking what your thoughts are on certain areas around CSprings

Unfortunately, I don't know much about CSprings. I'm about 3 hours north... with the usual traffic on I-25 :rotf:

I'm sure others can help you out though.... All I know is if you're into Wicca/Wiccans, you'll want to live in Manitou Springs. :rotf:

I can help you out a lot for CS. I am very familiar with the Progressive youre talking about. My ex's boyfriend works there and Ive known plenty of people to work there also. As for areas to live in I would have to know if you want to rent or buy and what you can afford on a monthly basis to answer that. You can PM me qwith that if you want. I know a but load of realtors and rental people as I am in the landscape/maintenance buisiness and do a ton of business with htem. Some have shit for properties and others have really nice ones. Let me knwo I can definately help you out. Hope to see another SYTYer around who gives a damn cause Im the only one in this town.

Sweet, sounds good I look forward to hearing from you. The SYTY community here kinda blows. tThere are about 10 trucks here in town, Im the only one who cruises, the only one who races, and the only one who is semi involved.

Hey...I thought I'd just chime in here. I just bought Sy #1616 from a guy in Littleton yesterday. I live in Fountain. Let me know if there is ever any kind of CS SyTy round up...I'd love to attend.

I'd also like to ride in another Sy or Ty...the one I bought seems to loose the smoothness of the motor under hard accelleration above about 3500 rpms. I don't know if it's just a characteristic of the Sy motor, but there is definitely a lot of vibration at the higher rpms - as if the motor isn't balanced well. It does feel quite smooth at the lower rpms, though.

Let me know if you'd like to meet up somewhere, and deal with a bit of a noob. Well, I've owned 4 Grand Nationals, as well as several other turbo IC'ed cars (see signature) so I'm not ignorant to the phenomenon.

Sure...

That'd be me! Terry's the name. Obviously, you know him. Small SyTy community in Colorado, I guess...

Great...maybe we can hook up after this impending storm!

No, my STi is silver, with yellow lens film on the headlights, and JDM (large) fog lights.

Yeah I know Austin pretty good. We can get together whenever and go through your truck. Unfortunately I dont knwo much about that truck, he didnt drive it a whole lot. It spent most of its time under a car cover. He didnt wnat to trash it. Couldnt even talk him into small mods. Ive about had with this damn snow.

Hey Mike -

I was a bit surprised to see that the Sy's have a constant rad. fan (the GN's have an electric). I like the idea of an amp draw vs. the power robbing stock style.

I'm anxious to see your Ty....looks like you got lots o' goodies!

:hijack: You would really be surprize at how little power the stock fan uses. If the engine temp isn't up where the stock fan would engage, the power loss is zero or real close to it. And if you want it to cool faster and alot better use a fan from a 2001 GMC Sarari.

Now wait just a tarnation minute! I thought the fan was on constantly...I believe it was whirling away yesterday when I started it up cold (and it's chilly 'round here this time o' year!).

You're saying it's a clutch style? It's only supposed to engage at higher temps?

Yes it is of the clutch style. If you are hearing it when it is cold outside it because it takes a few minutes after start-up to re-distribute the silicone back to it normal disengaged operating condition. Then it should be quiet until the temp rise in the cooling system calls for it to engage, then it should cycle.

Re: Things Mountains Can Do To Your Truck

Efven thought it is a clutch it still is constantly moving. Ditch it. Its a POS and takes up way too much room. Ofcourse I dont know what you r plans are with the truck but I ditched mine and dont miss it one bit.
