didnt u just build that motor ?that sux

unfortunately thats why high perfomance motors dont come with a warranty :-(

detonation.. its a terrible thing.

atleast you were smart enough to pull it apart before something really let go, and took everything else along with it.

Under the right (err.. wrong) conditions, alum. will vaporize and just disappear! My or may not find any "pieces" but the plugs will usually have particles on them to show for it.

Like Mike said, better now than after it completely let go. Sorry to that man.

Only Problem with that is most likely something went through the headers & hit the exhaust turbine so you better have it checked out too before you find out that it was damaged like it was on mine, it was just a matter of time before the bearing failed due to out of balance.

Yea, Ralph is right. I should have phrased that a little different. Under the right conditions is true. I have seen different alloy that looked almost "glass bead" smooth from detonation...... several times. Most of the time it's rough, jagged and looks like a blow torch got to it and yes, there are usualy "chunck's". Look over your ex. wheel real close.

Re: this can not be good

i can say its not the first srp piston i have seen do that in other motors...i had TRW's in my old motor and they took detonation and a beating and a broken crank and still used them with never a problem.....

WE Were out in your neck of the woods last night for some Midnight Madness!

Tuning or Running on a After Market DFI w/o Wide Band tuning is like Installing a Nitrous Kit on My 4.8L Silverado and hoping it sticks and that a rod doesn't knock my balls off.

My truck hasn't been running on Harry Anderson Tune because i'm lucky. For the last 2 years. It still has the same tune from 01/06 haven't changed a thing.

This hole thread is making me ill. Im putting my motor back in this week and all i can think about is Dons melted pistons!! **** that sucks. Ya know you try so hard to do everthing right, only to get bit in the ass. Welcome to the wonderfull world of high performance.

I thought you were running a GT35R? Thats why Im feeling discouraged because I thought that was a fairly "safe" streetable turbo that can make good power, I was going to get me one soon. Still will Im sure. Did you ever hear or see knock on a scantool?

don

if you say it was tuned for 93 octane without using a wideband then you need to realize it wasnt tuned at all.

why would you do this?

isnt it time to quit screwing around with stupid shit, fix it correctly and get harry to set up your tune?

I think don has had it with v6's i'm pretty sure he is going to go with a v8 this time around..

I disagree with this generalization. Up until a few years ago the average enthusiast didn't use WBO2 due to cost associated. They had to look at the other sensors and make their own judgement. Reading plugs, Knock Sensor, even their own intuition. Give the engine what it want in terms timing and fueling. Just because a tune right on for the day it was done, it may not compensate for the adjustment in weather (barometer, humidity and temperature)

Re: this can not be good

it was tuned on wideband i just dont have one installed on the truck for everyday driving. and yeah if i keep it i am doing a ls1 swap i already got most of the parts but i have offers for the ty as it is so i may sell it.

i started it a couple days after i got back from the dyno and it had a noise, i thought it was the fender well bangging around. sounded like it and i knew it was not bolted in all the way so i took it out anyways. when i got on it i heard noise when i got out of it when i was cruising back to normal speed and saw smoke so i pulled over and from idle to 1800 rpm it made noise and smoked but went away after 2k rpm i kniew it was the motor at that point and had a friend pick up my truck and trailer loaded it up and took it apart. it was tuned on 93oct and no wideband.

don
guess i misread the last line, but if i were you i would have harry tune it.

otherwise you put in an LSx motor and have the same issues.

tuneing using the knock sensor, intuition, reading plugs and looking at broken parts isnt exactly the best way to go about this and more expensive than just getting it tuned by someone who knows wtf he is doing and more importantly will be straight up with you.

yeah i just miswrote it, it was tuned on wide band i just dont have one myself they use theirs at the dyno place. as for the new motor it is a bit down the road i got a lot of parts on the way here just not all yet and will still have to install the heads and cam and set the motor in before i can take it anywhere.
