hummmm.........

A few have done the locker in the front, every one I know that did it went back to stock. 4wheels spinning = no control over anything and dangerous. They don't generally go straight either.

There is not a posi available.

I have seen many guys run the lock right in off road apps. and for stock trucks( off road mind you) they can work for a while but, for trucks making lots of power the lock right doesnt seem to be able to take the punishment

THEYRE MISERABLE SUCK SUCK SUCK ON THE STREET!!!!
NOISY AND CLUNKY AS HELL - PLUS, YOU'RE STEERING WOULD FEEL MOST FUNKY AS IT CAME IN AND OUT OF LOCK -
DO NOT - NOT - DO IT

you definately don't want the Lock right in your front end. It acts like a spool almost. I had one in my 1990 S-10 4x4 in the front end, and I kept destroying idler arms, tie rods, and complete alignment, every time I gouged it in four wheel drive. I even lowered the torsion bars to the point of having my center link and tie rods in a straight line, and I still would destroy the Moog "problem solver" brand new idler arm in a matter of minutes. The tires would toe in towards each other every time. I never knew the true trac was available for the front ends of our little trucks, but I think it would be the way to go.

according to lock rite they do not reccomend these for full time AWD truck or vehicles driven on pavement.

i have this in mine.

no problems around town or on highway.

you will hear a normal clicking in turns, especially off ramps.

if your racing and the drivers front comes off the ground, expect it to go to the left radically when the tire comes back down. if you have caltracs and it does this add 1/4 turn on the drivers side. (then kiss a stock axle adios).

if you find wander at high speed in the traps go get the caster maxed out.
my taillights would wiggle at top end.

if you get out of the groove on a launch, get out of it as it will be kind of harry trying to save it. not worth it to try to get back into it.

would i do this mod again. yes!

what i dont know for sure is exactly what is going to happen trying to keep it going straight off the line as we started putting more to it off the line.

i am referring to as the tires come off the ground more will we be able to keep it going straight as it comes back down. only testing is going to tell us this.

for most users this wont be an issue.

ed

i think guys were having trouble with the locker front diffs, makes it hard to keep the truck straight when launched.

ed hess took his out for this same reason. on the other hand the hoovers have one in there truck and have worked out the launch so that it goes straight. jwaller has his front carrier spider gears welded and the openings plate welded shut.... you will get many diff answers on the lockrite. keep in mind that the hoovers and ed hess are in a league of thier own.most of us will never see the power levels these guys are pushing.

if you have the time and are dedicated to tuning the suspension so that it will launch straight, then why would'nt you want one in there. 4 wheels pulling instead of 3 ?????
but that is just my opinion. i bought the one out of ed's truck and if i keep my sy it will be going in..

If I didn't know better, it sounds like open diff is the way to go...

wow got some time on your hands?thanks,i did read through all the post's i could find and reguardless of what those specific quotes say you'll find 2 or 3 posts down that the opposite is stated,i guess ill have to just try it and be my own judge.i just think with the hp mine is going to be making actual 4 wheel drive would be benificial.at the same time i understad that i could be a handful under a hard launch but what 1000 hp car is'nt?

yeah, it took a whole 10 mins

yes, there are some people who made posts saying they liked it, one of those being Ed Hess who I did quote as saying he would do the mod again and there were no problems on street driving.

Then if you keep reading, you will find he later removed it because it became too difficult to handle with the power he was making. BTW, he's either running low 9's or 8's at this point, which is more than on par for anyone making serious power.

If you want to do it then just do it, why did you bother posting asking what people thought if you choose not to listen to the opinions anyway.

i do want to hear what people thought, that was the whole reason for posting.....how do you come to the conclusion that i dont want to hear what people think about it,the whole reason was to get a collective opinion, why are you giving me such a hard time about it?

Re: those of you with front lockers, chime in

I think I've had every kind of front locker or front diff combo for my sy. I've had: Loc rite, welded spool, stock open.
The sy goes the straightest with the stock open front diff. and fastest (for me)
The Loc rite would torque streer pretty good down low, but would still go straight after about 100 ft.
The welded spool went straight down low, and was great though the whole pass, but on the deccelleration on the big end the sy would pull hard left, I didn't care for that at 145mph+ so I only tried that once. I may try that spool again at the track when I did it the first time it was on the street.
My sy was running high and mid 9's at the time of these tests.
Right now I have an open front diff in it, and thats probably what I am going to keep.
Hope this helps

if some sort of different differential was put in there then you could get a air or electric locker. that is no easy task but probably the best solution. Maybe a reverse cut 9" with a e-locker so you could shut it off after the 60' or something. I believe with enough money a locker manufacturer would make an e-locker for you. this would be the second best option but prob the easiest.
