would the engine/trans bolt to our transfer case or tbss transfer case fit in our trucks? our they 4l80e based? no clue but you can get the whole wrecked truck for 4500-5000 with a scrap title. I'd be willing to give it a shot if anybody knows?

Re: trailblazer ss boltup?

The TBSS runs a 4L70e, which is an upgraded 4L60E (similar to the 4L65E). And those are electronic versions of the 700R4.

What I'm not sure of is if the bolt pattern on the tailshaft housing for the TBSS is different than the ones on the older 700R4 units. Output shafts should all still be 27 spline.

Not sure of what controls (if any) are used on the TBSS tcase, because I don't know much about it. It might be completely mechanical. If it's completely mechanical or has very limited controls, swapping it in might be fairly easy. If it has alot of controls, especially controls that are linked to a computer other than the powertrain PCM (like for instance the Body Control Module (BCM)) then swapping it becomes alot harder.

Re: trailblazer ss boltup?

what are you looking to do? keep the T-case or the engine/trans and put them in a SyTy???

if youre wanting the T-case, my next question would be.... WHY???? To my understanding, the T-case in the TBSS / Silverado SS is a big piece of metallic garbage and certainly has no advantage over the BW4472.

Re: trailblazer ss boltup?

The TBSS and Silverado SS don't use the same tcase.

The Silverado SS uses a NV149 with a viscous coupling.
From what I've seen, TBSS uses a unit with a Torsen T3 diff not the NV149 box.

However, you raise a good point: What's the objective of this discussion / manuever?

Re: trailblazer ss boltup?

easy upgrade. I wanted to try and keep things simple. I don't have tons of access to dyno facilities, I can't do custom ecm tunes etc. however I'm good at taking things that work great for other people and make them work for me and so on. kind of like a cts-v. take a decent chassis and throw a corvette motor at it, wah-la instant great sports car.

Re: trailblazer ss boltup?

I'm revisiting this post. I now know of at least 3 ls2's for sale cheap. I ended up rebuilding the 700r4 so that will stay allong with t-case. how about the ls2? I don't really see too many guys with these in there truck. anyone know why?

probably cause the ls1s are so cheap but work very well.

Re: trailblazer ss boltup?

Starts getting expensive is the biggest problem.

To make it fit you'll need:
1.) C5 / C6 accessory drive (if your engine doesn't already have it)
2.) Custom oilpan to clear front diff.
3.) An exhaust system solution. Last I checked nobody made headers for LS AWD/4wd S10s. So, you're looking at modifying manifolds (because they don't fit stock either) or building your own headers.
4.) Controls for the engine. Either a modified stock harness or a new harness (Current Performance makes them from scratch) and PCM (which probably will need some programming).
5.) Cooling system needs a fair bit of work, probably have to move the radiator into the core support (can be done without but it's really tight.
6.) You may need to modify the Heater box. for pass side valve cover clearance.
7.) Engine mounts. Turbotime used to offer a set, not sure if they're still available.

The accessory drive and front of the engine are completely different between the two, absolutely nothing interchanges between the V6 (and the old SBC) and the LS motor. If you want AC, you're going to need a custom setup (I think Current has a solution).

That's kinda the short list.

money and strength.

The aluminum blocks are more expensive then the cast iron block LS motors. Additionally the cast iron blocks can take more abuse and can be rebuilt many more times.

Re: trailblazer ss boltup?

The LS2 has an advantage over the LS1, bigger bore size and higher factory ratings.

Just be careful buying one of the LS motors used. They can only take a .010" overbore, which means if the cylinder walls are scored or damaged in almost any way, the block is scrap. They can't be sleeved using the conventional process (like you'd do with an iron block), so you end up buying a fresh alum block (~$1k) from GM. The iron block motors can be overbored, but they weigh 80+ lbs more (LQ4 / LQ9, etc).
