Transmission damage

I'll post up pics soon but just thought I'd share something that may save some problems.
I see a lot of guys say that if their trans isn't working right that they'll take it to the track and "blow it up" boost launching if they know they are getting a rebuild. Please don't do that. I've got one here right now that a guy sent in as a core for a firebird rebuild....after what I found I had him air check his cooler it was plugged. This trans had been run without proper lube and the input sun gear had basically melted down until there was a small lip left at the base and the input planetary pinions were chewed a little but still intact. This makes it impossible to get the sun gear out. If the sun gear can't come out, you cannot get to the output shaft snap ring. This means the trans is junk. Please save yourself the money and headache and when the trans ain't acting right, don't try to finish it off. I'll get some pics here later so you can see what I'm talking about.

Transmission Builder

Are you any good with manual transmissions? I think I'll build another like the one in my truck since I have all of the goodies except a housing but I need someone to put the puzzle together. You game?

David rocks.....

I have my hands full now with 4L80E conversions and 700 rebuilds. Manuals just aren't what most guys are looking for.

This one is really rough because the guy had 5 pinion planetaries in it and just wanted it pulled apart for cryo and the addition of a beast shell and 4L65 reaction tube. Now the planetaries are junk.

All you have to do is say, "Not with a 10' pole!" like everybody else does when it comes to working on the mutant spawn of Satan I call a Sy. GEEZE!!! lol:)

Im thinking instead of teaser shots you should snap a few pics of the back of the trans to show us more industrious ppl how the adaptor/tail shaft of the that six spd is put togeather ;) .

Re: Transmission damage

For those who want to see some carnage:
IMG_0205.sized.jpg

This is from my first transmission that I grenaded in my syclone back in 2002 two weeks before the NATS in Chitown. If you look closely at the rear planetary carrier, you will see that all the teeth are stripped out. In addition to that, the sprag is torn in two and some of the springs on the spring retainer are considerably shorter in length. I had found fragments of the springs in my transmission pan when I installed a deeper TCI cast pan the year before.

This is out of a good friend's 1995 Tahoe that he grenaded on his honeymoon of all things several hundred miles from home :(. Transmission started slipping while going through the mountains in WV and the transmission gauge that we had installled a few weeks prior was pegged... He pulled over and the transmission was so hot that ATF was boiling out of the vent tube onto to road. As you can see one of the planetaries in the rear planetary seized up and the needle bearings "welded" themselves to each other. That little blob of metal from the bearings on the low roller clutch is fused to it from the friction. Before we installed his new transmission, we flushed out his lines and stock transmission cooler with my drill pump. The ATF was so burnt that it came out pitch black and took about 10 quarts of ATF to flush everything out.

Re: Transmission damage

Note stripped teeth on planets and cracket supports between the planets (the support is the metal that holds the upper section to the lower). Doing back to back 15lb launches on the street in front of my house testing traction devices is the culprit.

Yup, Morgan is the "Grand Champion" so far in the "When 700R4's go bad" picture pages :p !

Perhaps everyone who has posted pics could elaborate on the symptoms vs. the damage so that folks many have an *idea* what could be a problem when their transmission goes south? As I mentioned in my post, I had no forward gears only reverse after mine went. It's prolly safe to assume that there was a loud bang in Morgan's case then nothing...
