Perhaps everyone who has posted pics could elaborate on the symptoms vs. the damage so that folks many have an *idea* what could be a problem when their transmission goes south?

Mine would bind up at extremely low speeds (like creeping through a parking lot) in fwd or rev gears and had a vibration/hum in manual third at ~45mph. Pulled the pan and found chunks of gear teeth so I put the pan back on and flogged the pee out of it till it broke ;) .

Morgan, which of those pics if from when you were doing the AWD water burnout until you hit dry pavement and it grabbed?
I've got another one I'm doing where the teeth on the rear planetary where the inner race engages broke completely off. "Neutral drop" did it. Got another where the guy revved it up to set the brakes and didn't wait for the rpms to come back down...didn't make it past reverse.
It's nice to know what people were doing when stuff went bad so it can be avoided.

Transmission #1: I burnt up the 3rd gear clutch pack doing donuts all day in the snow, still moved, just had no 3rd or OD

Transmission #2 : Got screwed up after it was stolen, pump was smoked, clutches smoked, ect, still drove but slipped

Transmission #3: Dont really know when how or why it happened. Put the truck away for the winter and it was fine, took it out in the spring, went out to dinner and by the time I came home the trans sounded like it had a bag of ball bearings dumped in it. It shifted perfectly fine when it was cold, but when it warmed up it slipped and made crunchy sounds, the drum picture and forward planet are from that rebuild.

Transmission #4: Took off from a light in the rain, part throttle normal driving, I think the rear wheels broke loose on the 1-2 shift, the RPMs jumped but came down and all seemed normal. I drove for another 9 miles until I had to stop for a light, then I lost all forward gears. Luckily there was nobody behind me and I was only 3 blocks from my house, so I just drove home in reverse

It's prolly safe to assume that there was a loud bang in Morgan's case then nothing...
actually its not  Ive never once heard a loud bang when any of my trannies broke, infact the only sound Ive ever heard was the crunchy sound on Trans #3 and I dont even know what the heck cause that one to go. :dunno:

you must have me confused with someone else, the closest Ive ever come to that senario was when I was driving home in the rain and the rears just happened to break loose on the 1-2 shift, those pictures would be all the bottom ones taken on the gray piece of wood.

The pictures on the white background are from the pervious failure.

You might be thinking about Mark Larson (Buster) as he did that at '03 NATS in KC. He was lighting them up in the water box and then there was a LOUD bang. Everyone including myself thought that he snapped his propshaft. Upon further nspection, it was discovered that he had grenaded the front differential. I had it on video and it was on here for awhile until my gallery was closed down.

I would have done that myself if I wasn't more than 60 miles from home... But that's why I have roadside assistance so they can haul my broken crap back home  .
