So when you moved the front mount on the diff I noticed that you have repair written where it originally was. Did you cut into the case of the diff or something and have to fill a hole? Also, did you gut the front diff to do this welding work or did you just weld it up with the guts in it. MIG or TIG for the aluminum welding?

I'm thinking that moving that mount is a very good idea to accommodate the rack and am considering doing it myself. I'll prolly wait and see how the full size diff works out for you and maybe even go that route.

Thanks,
-Matt

The repair was there since it seemed as the material got a little thin and we had the guy weld it up. No the case has never been opened up he welded it as you see we first made a temp mount on top and cut the bottom one off then once that one was welded up we cut the top mount off and moved it there. I believe it was mig welding but Acehaag will have to clarify.

If you have someone that can weld aluminum it is not a big chore or just have a shop weld it.I will take some better pictures of the diff aswell when we take it out

Very nice! Why the 1/2 ton front axle, just have no faith in the stock one?

Lots of torque going at it. Its a twin turbo LSX style motor and I don't like changing front diffs now and do not even want to think how many I will go through if I am hard on it.

Plus my grandpa always said if you are going to build it always over build it. :)

Edit: I forgot to mention that I have seen the front diff take a huge beating before at the 1000hp range so the stock ones are good but the bigger the better.

Re: TTTyphoon

Nice. Do you happen to know what size ring gear is in your 1/2 ton axle and if there are any good diffs available?

I have similar truck/powertrain plans btw :)

yeah I saw that pretty cool.

I believe it is 8.25" ring gear and we are just rebuilding it with some good parts and changing from the 3.42's to the 3.73's

Why 3.73's, you running NA?

It will have a built T56 and with the overdrive I could go with even a 4.10's but am trying to keep it street able.

The reason behind a manual and even the triangulated 4 link and so on is so that it can handle, yet should still be able to make a few passes at the track.

Re: TTTyphoon

I can understand the the manual, most boost guys go the other way to load the motor. I think you will find with those gears you will be shifting more than you need to, but maybe not.

Turbo's like to be loaded.

Yeah I do see what you mean but the one thing in my favor here is it is a progressive turbo set-up. And the t56 also helps with a couple taller gears.

My problem as well is that I do not like automatics because you end up not having as much control over your vehicle in my opinion. Anyway I love to hear different opinions. They make you think twice about what you are doing. thanks Jim

Re: TTTyphoon

Ground it down and put a coat of POR 15 on it.

Here is above the rear window there was some surface rust(common on TYs IDK why they did not all have the wing) Any way we cut out the area blasted and coated in por 15. The crimped the edge to over lay the new piece.

So that is where we are at alot of cleaning up to do and still need to drill out a bunch of rivets on the cladding. In a week I will be off for the semester so updates should get better.

How much control of vehicle do you think your going to have with that much power? The power of LSx Twin Turbo is going to be insane. Your going to be pointing it in a straight direction and then hitting the pedal.

None of the Ty's came with rear wings from the factory.

Maybe he was referring to that as a wing.

Pictured is probably what he is talking about. However that 'wing' was not available form the factory on Ty's,

If I turn the boost down I will have some control  . But yeah I do understand there is a time and place for an auto but the manual is more if a pro touring/ performance feel. Ii have another typhoon that is pretty much stock and am picking up another this weekend that will be a v6 auto build when I get around to it.

Did you just win the lottery or something?
