Re: Turbo 3800 blazer

I was suprised at the response it got down in woodward, alot more positive than I was expecting.

It made the 120 mile trip with the only issues being the shifter cable coming loose from the trans and a timing issue that was tuned out once I got down there.

After checking things out everything looks ok, spark plugs are good, wiring seems to be not ruined, and it might be time to start cleaning that up a bit more. Only things really left to wire in would be a v.s.s. and windshield wipers/blinkers. I've been driving this truck everywhere over the weekend without any other real issues.

Tonight I'm gonna pull the valve body off the trans and take a look at it. When I put it together i didn't go as far as would could have, so me and a friend are gonna do some drilling and see where that takes us.

Good seeing you down there sean, hopefully this thing is still moving for the spool party next weekend and it goes long enough for you to make it after work.

Re: Turbo 3800 blazer

at a cross roads...

I could either rebuild the trans thats in it and have it going by the end of the week for 3-500 dollars. It will be only capible of minimum power. I would use this time to save up for the 400 build.

-or-

go straight for the throat and start eh 400 build. I have a guy lined up who does amazing work, including custom converters. the cost for this whole build will be just shy of 2k. I should be able to put that together in the next 3 weeks, and he can start on it tonight...This transmission would last me forever, and be good to close to 1000hp, torque converter will be perfect for what I'm doing, as he is making it, and has a great rep. for his turbo car stuff.

I think we all know what the answer is...I'm still tearing it apart tonight and selling what parts I can of the old, ruined trans. I might be able to have it sorta rebult and sold as a shitty trans for a couple hundred on CL. converter is worth money though...if I can ever find someone who wants it

also, the trans melted, forgot to mention...

Re: Turbo 3800 blazer

all joking apart, I'm selling it as a whole, I can't take it apart. I am selling it honestly as a slipping trans with good parts in it. I could try to take a picture of the smell though...

I dropped off my trans tonight. This guys also making me a converter.

ol' drippy will be missed.

I did some test fitting of my adapter plate and it looks like if I knock a small section of my dog house in about 1/4 inch the bell housing should fit pretty well. As for the rest of the trans I am not sure...if I have to cut the whole tunnel out to make it all fit...I will. I think the rear driveshaft will be fine, but I will be forced to do something with the front, I might have to get it re-cut, or it might be close enough to just have a spacer made, I wont really know until I get the adapter and see how thick it is. I know the th400 is 1 inch longer, but the stock adapter from the 700 to the t-case is almost 2 inches, if the custom adapter is a little thinner, it would save me a few bucks.

Re: Turbo 3800 blazer

body is now out of the way of the adapter, should be all good from the motor to the trans. the 700 body doesnt look too much smaller. I think I will be ordering the transfercase adapter this week.

With crazy luck, I will have HS blazer on road by sundown sunday. with insane luck i will have old 16 inch rims in which to mount my new (old/found) BFgoodrich R1 tires to to then mount to the HS blazer and do crazy turns with.

Re: Turbo 3800 blazer

Well I got my adapter kit in the mail and dropped it off to my trans guy yesterday. He maintains that it will be done Saturday so we shall see. With so.e help I was also able to get a billet flexplate ordered so that should be here in time for the build as well.

I am thinking it won't be to bad of a swap to do, but I k ow the front prop shaft is going to need to be redone. It should be back on the road by next week.

Re: Turbo 3800 blazer

The trans is complete, and it shoudl be a short wait on the converter. I'm expecting it sometime this week. So I pulled it in the garage in preperation, and decided to do some work.

As I know times are changing, I started in on the semi painful job of sealing up the floor. As some of you know I caged the vehicle....with absolutely no regard for the floor. After a dirt road I learned that was a mistake. That experiance coupled with the desire for winter driving and not freezing to death lead me to use some aluminum flashing I found to at heast help with the floor hole/****ed door situation.

Also, I got bored and decided to make a little 'charm' for the shift knob. I'm a little kid, and it kinda reminded me of 'the natural' **** YOU ITS COOL

Re: Turbo 3800 blazer

You could also spray the floor with truck bed coating so it seals all the little holes and insulate and have one uniform color/texture too. That wouldn't hurt........

Too heavy...lol. I don't mind the patchwork, and the small holes are fine. The holes that where big enough to where my tuning hardware was falling out, as well as cans of stuff (my fire extinguisher, for instance) those were the real issue. Still some gap around the bars going into the floor to allow for the body movement, but I'll prolly just goo the shit out of those and let it crack and break as it needs to, and it will prolly still be a decent seal.

My next move for the interior is heat.

*edit*

I think I should establish the main purpose of this truck, besides the overal desire to make it compete in nearly any automotive event and do just that...compete. I want to be scared, like litterally scared to hit the throttle sometimes for fear of death. the holes in the floor, the unrefined...everything...in part is there to enhance that feeling for myself and anyone who decides to get into the passenger seat. I truely want to be scared of this truck. If the 700+ hp this setup makes isn't enough It wont be long before theres that turbo sitting in front of an LS3. I can't explain why I'm doing this, other than those 2 goals.

Story on the converter is that its supposed to be super legit, Mike riding built it out of stuff he found so I have pretty high hopes. trans is full roller upgraded most things. Spins like a dream by hand, supposed to be good for 1100 hp.

Plan is to install tomorrow.

NOTE

for anyone trying to re-create this in the future (lol) the difference in length is exactly 1.5 inches. (th400 with adapter is 1.5 inches longer)

DOUBLE NOTE
dry weight of the trans was 132 lbs, about 15 lbs lighter than my mostly drained 700r4

Re: Turbo 3800 blazer

worked on it on and off over the weekend, was busy with a few things.

I managed to go get all the bolts I needed from Mid-state for 10 bucks, which I thought was cool.

stuff I did-
Super flex plate mounted
trans adapter bolted to engine
trans modified to fit adapter
trans bolted to adapter
crossmemeber cut and modified to fit new trans, re-welded, and installed
rear driveshaft fit and in place
shift linkage modified and operational
half of new hardened rocker bolts installed

stuff I need to do-
pick up and install front driveshaft
install trans cooler
figure out TC spacing issue, and bolt in
install other half of rocker bolts

So that TC is an issue, although I sorta knew it would be. It seems as though I can get away with spacing it off the flex plate a bit, and the way I think I'm gonna do it is to go get some hardened washers and get my spacing right so that it drives, and then take those washers out, measure them, and have actual metal weighted spaces made by my machinest friend guy.

Other than that thought the install didn't go too bad. There was a couple issues that are a bit tricky to explain, but short version is its bolted in and I'm pretty sure its gonna stay there. I'm hoping to finish the install on tuesday after work.

Re: Turbo 3800 blazer

Plans are still centered around tonight. After witnessing the extreme joy obtained by a friend from his pit scooter I decided that I would look around and buy one, then I realized that I built one when I was 17 and had forgotten about it. I had to fix the pull starter, tighten the chain, and epoxy the throttle cable but she is now ready for action

Re: Turbo 3800 blazer

Last night I managed to bolt the converter up to the flex plate, with a gap of 5 washers...I may try 4 washers and see if it still grabs the pump, basically see how close I can get before it stops working. The reason I care being that there is an alignment post that is supposed to go into the back of the crank, as of right now I think its in, but the farther the better (if you know what I mean)

I had to tear apart some of the old trans cooler to make way for the new, way smaller, but way better trans cooler. I ended up with a hayes XL super trans cooler, and mounted it in teh back. I still need to rig up a fan, but its fine for now.

So, fun problems arose when I went to start it. The motor won't run for crap, its acting like it doesn't have enough fuel pressure. That aside it still idled, and I was able to get fluid in the trans and verify that the wheels turn with some gusto. at idle I was able to get reverse, and all forward gears, and even at idle with the manual trans I could force it into 3rd, so thats a nice test. I don't think there are any 'bad' noises coming from teh trans, but its tricky with the motor running so badly.

Tonight I am going to get a fuel pressure gauge and check it out. I hope I don't have to drop the tank but, its possible that one of my fuel pumps fell out of the block I;ve got back there, its hates living.

Truck did successfully back out of the garage and park next to it. Even at idle, the whole setup feels tighter than it did.

Re: Turbo 3800 blazer

Yesterday me and scott put together a fuel pressure tester from hardware fittings that we never ended up using. After some wire jigglin the motor started running correctly...which led me to do some light wiring work...

Trans acts alot different now than the 700 did, like, its alot more...there. When you put it into gear it chirps the tires, when you shift it...shifts, its great. I drove it up and down the driveway a few times to check it out and then out on to the road for a quick test. All 3 gears are there, and lets you know it shifted pretty positivly. I didn't really do any full throttle stuff, other than a middle of first hit and kinda quick into second, but when it shifted into second the back tires just started spinning so I didn't really learn much. I called and my front driveshaft should be done tonight, getting that in should help out.

I need to go through and check my rear brakes out, I replaced them, but I'm not sure if they are working correctly yet. I tsill need to install my boost controller and a few other things, but its getting better all the time. I'll try to get some pics posted of the install.

Plan is track on sunday.
