VORTEC heads?

The taller ports and changed bolt location/angles is a key indicator to "vortec" as are the taller ports.

GM used the term and had premature Identification IMO.

Re: VORTEC heads?

Sorry it was suppose to say intake valve. You will see the eyebrow in the downstream of the port that causes the intake charge to swirl down in to the chamber, like a vortec. Hence the name

Except the old LB4 heads have the same swirl ramp, just not as pronounced as the L35.

The later "vortec" heads don't use this ramp.

What Justin posted was accurate, at least within the terminology that's common around here. The 'vortec' name was used inconsistently within GM.

This post sorts it out rather well:

I'm not defending Pocahontas by any means, but I know that a lot of cars came equipped differently if they were sold in the California market. Maybe Pocahontas is only knowledgeable about what may have been sold for the California market; it was only a drill and tap away, right?? I really don’t know, so let us know if this is true…

OK, I know about the vortecs head from 1996 on, but I don't know the answer to this. For those of us that live in a undeniably screwed up state for all the crazy smog laws that are here. If you know the answer to this question please post up and help us out.

If in the location of the 1/2" indentation where the exhaust crossover would be if you were to drill a hole here, could you make the EGR operable for our trucks?

1. Anyone that knows care to answer this ?

2. Would this work and if not why not ?

TIA

I'd rather look at the head to say for 100% but I'd say you'll just be drilling into the water jacket. I'm pretty sure there is no part of the passage in the head except for that little indentation. It would make no sense for GM to cast the rest of the port needed to make this an option.

Re: VORTEC heads?

if you did a modified vortec intake set up (not sure if thats possible) you could pipe an egr off the header like they did on the vortecs but that would be a lot of work if it would even work.

Can you just leave it hooked up and have the port plugged? would emissions know the difference if it was actually doing anything?

I have thought about doing it this way, but if they test for egr operation the truck would fail because it wouldn't stall .

If they went that far I'd move to another state:lol: Sounds like some nazi shit.

I plan on moving. I just have to wait a few more years. My wife and I are looking in a couple of areas right now with Colorado being one of them. Looking for 5 to 25 acres out in the country maybe 45min to 1hour from a city that has everything one would need.

What kind of country? People love it out in Peyton, about 5-10 miles from town. You can get some nasty sprawls out there cheap. Only thing is, it is all brush, not sure what kind of land you are looking for. Any kind of mountain scape and you are going to pay big bucks. We dont really seem to have many wooded areas unless you are in the mountains. I hear you can acquire property in Woodland park semi cheap but never really looked in to it.

Probably wouldn't pass the visual inspection.

Re: VORTEC heads?

Anyone know what Dig was referring to here? How can you fake it?

Thinking he meant open it back into the upper intake. So when they force it open it just opens a loop from the throttle body to the intake and basically does nothing. So it'll move, and look like its doing something but its just circulating intake air to the intake air. I know opening it to the outside would just cause a massive vac leak and that'll stall the engine out. And plugging it against the head will make it draw a vacuum when open which will shut again making it seem like it stuck closed.

Mind you, this is just an educated guess. Someone correct/confirm/add to my guess.

I think they look for the engine to stumble/die, so maybe he meant out to atmosphere.

if you vent the egr path to atmosphere it will be a massive vacuum leak and that will cause a stumble and most likely stall it.

I can just imagine the look on the guy's face when he squeezes the mitivac and the suction whistles as my engine stumbles!

Re: VORTEC heads?

I just have this urge to go buy a vortec head from the junkyard and have it cut into sections right where that dimple is that should be the egr passageway! Maybe an exhaust passage is just a few inches below the surface!

Maybe I could build a fake egr valve with a sensor that would send a signal to retard timing!

Maybe I should move to another state.
