Re: Would lack of exhaust pressure cause boost problems

Its a bone stock truck. If u drive the truck and floor it the boost shoots up to 15 psi. If u brake torque it it stays in the negative. Not sure if the cat is hollow but the exhaust is broke off after the cat. Also how easily should the waste gate move? I've worked on many s10s and sonomas but this is my first syclone. Not too familiar with turbo setups.

Are you using a aftermarket boost gauge? Not to say its not working, but the stock ones are known to be wildly inaccurate

Stock boost gauge the truck seems to be having problem with wastegate. The truck doesn't seem to have much acceleration. When floored truck boost gauge goes up to 15 boost and starts missing it seems like.

Gross understatement of the year. ;)

What he said.... those factory boost gauges are more of a decorative add on. First thing I'd do, is get a single pod cluster and a vac/boost gauge.... you'll be miles ahead in this game.

(Pssst! I have a single pod cluster for sale! Might even have a boost gauge I could add in. PM me!)

Re: Would lack of exhaust pressure cause boost problems

Wastegate could be...I would look at ignition, if it seems to "miss" under boost conditions

Ignition very important with boosted cars. Think of trying to light a match with 15 psi of air blowing it out
Ur funny, throws

Just did a complete tune up lastnight. Cap was very caroded. Looked to be original wires but not sure. Did the o.e. wires say turbo on them?

It's just a six

So you are asking by having a better flowing exhaust IE, hollow cat & the exhaust broke off after the cat (= better flowing) will get less boost? Then no, that will create better/quicker spooling turbo, could cause over boosting, but not under boosting.
It would get into boost quicker & easier,, if you had just a dump pipe from the turbo, no back pressure.

OG wires were Packard wires? Delco? I have them in a box, no turbo written on plug wires.

Haven't drivin it sence the tuneup so not sure if the miss is still there. Also if in park and u rev the motor I would assume the waste gate should open when u let off the throttle? This one doesn't move at all.

I believe black wires that say "Turbo" on them are ATR Black Beauties. Like It's just a six said those are not OEM. I believe ATR went out of business 7 or 8 years ago.

No, the waste gate should not open in park or neutral & revving it high.

What you are describing is what a BOV (blow off valve) should do.

I can get 5-6 psi in neutral. But my turbo is not stock size, just looks sorta stock;) :rotf:

BTW, just curious as to how much boost you can see while say revving to 4500 in neutral?
