turbo selection question

i have a 91 firebird i put a ty motor in, little time after i started driving it the turbo suddenly stopped making boost so i took it off (i know very little about turbos), the seals were bad and the fins were gettting a little chewed. i figure i would just get a new turbo. my one buddy says i should get a big 16g turbo. the only real performance i plan on adding is possibly a set of vortech heads and a cam, plus switching it to a 6 speed tranny- i already have a 4.10 rear. if anyone has suggestions on what turbo i should get and a place to get a good deal on one that would be appreciated.

Re: turbo selection question

how much do you know about turbos?

other mods you will need with a bigger turbo are:

better fuel pump
bigger injectors
3 bar map sensor depending on if you plan on running more boost than stock - I suspect you will.
custom tune possibly?
wastegate - external/internal?
wideband O2 sensor for tuning?

how much knock were you running?
what internals have you got?
what cam with the heads?
what intercooler setup have you got?

if you start making bigger power withthe turbo then your internals will maybe let go - rods, pistons, gaskets etc.

once you've done that you'lln eed a beefier trans..

it never ends...

what do you want to do with it? you want top end or fast spool? driveable vs track?

:D

Re: turbo selection question

I would find a new buddy, a 16g would actually be smaller than a stock turbo.

Re: turbo selection question

i recently found that out myself that a 16g is smaller, as for all those variables mentioned before i am basically looking for something stockish that can make some more boost if i wanted to, so far i havnt found an option that will cost me less than 600 bux, the one placed told me they make a new stock turbo (17c) for typhoons that is $995 and the upgrade to a 20g for $995 also. if i can get a stock turbo or one thats a little better for if i put vortechs and a cam with a tune i would be happy. but basically im looking for options and i dont want to put a but load of money in it.

Re: turbo selection question

410 gears are not an ideal gear ratio, unless you are running 33" tall tires.:2cents:

i know its not good really for the charger set up but i had already had the rear in it from when i ran my 350, i still have the 373 rear from the typhoon i was thinkin about installing in my bird so the ratio was better suited

Typhoons were 3.42 unless you change them.

this is very helpful, i cant remember my online source and i never checked myself but my understanding was that they were 3.73, now my question would be is a 3.73 gear better or should i use the 3.42?

Re: turbo selection question

is it safe to run that much boost on stock internals, do you really think its a good idea to get a 20g or 25g and not a smaller turbo for a motor that i dont plan on modding much more than a cam and vortec heads(and tune)?

The stock motors can handle loads of boost. Its all about fuel tuning. Sy/Ty's eat 20 psi from a 20g turbo for breakfast. Just need to tune right. I can't speak for Mr. Stock Transmission. But he will let you know later. Here is a vid of a Sy that ran 11's with the stock bottom end.

Re: turbo selection question

If your going to a 6 speed (I assume you were taking about a t56 swap) keep the 4.10s it will really hop and still be able to cruise up the highway.

rwd + manual + turbo 4.3 = slow, burnout machine if it ever gets into boost.

true but my little brothers mustang rwd + manual 6spd + turbo 5.0 = fast as hell and allot of fun... he has a t62e and the things at full boost around 2600rpms lol

Re: turbo selection question

its ok i like doin burnouts:tup:, besides at the track I could learn to drive good enough to control the spin and still get a decent time, I already drive very well, and the 6 speed has much more versatility than an auto in my opinion (plus i think it can handle the stress better without being built?!)
