You've gotta trim all those ears off the trans or it won't clear the floor pans.

George, thanks. Which ears do you mean?

Can you edit my pic and post in here so I know exactly. What is best - an angle grinder? Dremel?

I gave all the parts to the shop. They know about the V6 arrrangement being different from the V8 and have the parts now so I am just going to have to trust them. They did a very good job on my friend's V8 for his TVR Cerbera but V6s in the UK are unfamiliar as most people have big V8 MOPAR cars and stuff.

Thanks for the hints guys. Any and all help is appreciated!

Re: 4L80E arrived today

Well, I am in Afghanistan so as you can imagine, things aren't exactly rocking. I have been out on the ground once but it was only brief. Went to a US SF compound and felt like a total REMF. The guys were tired and in good spirits but you could see they were ready to go. How your infantry cope with 15 month tours...wow. Respect :usa:

Anyway, I got some progress updates and some pics! :woot:

First, the shiny new stuff.....

TC from jwaller, truly a piece of art. Someone else said something about not putting it on the truck as it looks so good! I am inclined to agree!

Also a thing of beauty is the GT 45R from E RUE. I haven't seen a comparison vs the old turbo or the 20G but it looks bigger. I did a lot of research into compressor theory and this thing is the business. Thanks E!

IMG_0899.jpg

With a new turbo, I needed a new dp so RPM saw me right with their kit and the external wastegate. I went with a Greddy Profec Spec B II external boost controller as well as so many people here have talked about it. The dp looks sweet though, can't wait to get it all plumbed in.

There aren't any engine pics for now but I will be painting the block grey when I am done so I can identify coolant and oil leaks etc. Black might look better but I have a feeling I will be spending some time under the hood!!

As far as the body goes, things are progressing as well:

The workplace looks pretty cluttered but they just got started. I am nervous about the cladding still being on as they do this but I have told the guy how much it is all worth so he had best be damned careful and not break any of it.If the worst possible happens I can just walk away and buy another Ty. Fingers crossed. He does good work though and collects MGs. He has 5 of them and comes in on the weekends to play with his own cars and is determined to make me proud. I believe some of his paint jobs have been featured in UK magazines.

080321B.jpg

The chassis has been well protected by the bitumen and tar from the roads in Saudi Arabia where I acquired the car. Once the chassis has been stripped, the whole thing is getting coated with a zinc galvanic coating that my friend had on his TVR frame. Then it is getting powder coated. Black this time as grey would look off!

080321C.jpg

One thing I am really pleased with is that the su frame and underside are not rusted much. It is only a few extremities where the crappy workmanship in Saudi didn't pass muster. The guy's as pleased with the state of it as am I. My main area of concern is the engine bay as I want that immaculate to start work in so that it is all covered.

Hopefully I can ask some questions at Homecoming!!! :drinking:

I think I have some work to do.

What are you doing on 25th May?

Can someone tell me which bits of the 4L80E to grind down so it fits? Only 40 days before I am all over this. George? Jeff?

The engine is coming out of the shop in a week or two. While I build it I am getting a few things powder coated:

upper intake plenum
oil pan
timing cover
accessory bracket

Any other suggestions for powder coating while it is all apart?

I guess I now need to start thinking about accessories. Can anyone think of any things they wish they had when they were starting?

My main problem is going to be bolts/nuts/washers etc. Hoses aren't such a big deal. I have new sensors and will be replacing some of the wiring. Clamps?

I plan on using RTV silicone for the headers as gaskets have all failed. :(

40 days to go!!! :D

Re: 4L80E arrived today

I suspect by cutting off the "ears" they mean the widest part of the transmission bellhousing, i.e. the "ears" right next to the 2 vertical bellhousing bolt area on each side.

I would suggest running a ground from your alternator's case to your frame

Re: 4L80E arrived today

Re: 4L80E arrived today

Ryan, roger, will do that. I will robably end up grinding off some of the powdercoat to ensure correct grounds as per your suggestion.

OK, some more progress:

First off, I have never seen any of the following work carried out before so find it interesting. Maybe some other people will benefit from a short explanantion:

4 bolt mains as opposed to two bolt mains keep the crank in better to handle more torque and power!! The holes are not drilled in parallel so if there is any force then it is makes it harder the further the cap is pulled though if it got pulled any then the engine is dead.

The caps are billet steel from RPM and are 20 tonnes tensile strength, roughly twice that of the block. If these go I need a new block basically. The builkder said they were very well made.

Engine Block having 4 bolt main caps fitted:

DSCN1619.jpg

Once fitted they need to be aligned with the crank shaft. This is done by a line boring machine so that the cranks bearings are all parallel axes of rotation. Very important.

DSCN1674.jpg

The line boring machine is basically a big drill that bores out a constant diameter through the block to make sure it is for want of a better word, sweet, all the way down the crank.

DSCN1673.jpg

The crank is being sent off to get tuftrided which is a process similar to nitriding. It makes the crank tougher so it is worn less by start up or the odd unlikely metal to metal contact. For $200 on a $6000 rebuild I thought it best not to have any doubts or regrets. I never plan to open this engine up (famous last words!!)

More to follow when I get an update on the body work!

5 weeks before I am back in the world........

Will your trans computer let you do the paddle shift thing?

Sorry for the late reply but yes. There is a thread in technical articles about eh PCS unit. I am glad I paid the money for the best product out there.

I don't plan to run paddles shift though as th 80E sounds perfect just the way it is.

Re: 4L80E arrived today

Nothing much happening apart from some engine progress. Apparently the frame and cab are separate and stripped ready for the frame's powdercoat and a new respray fro the cab and cladding. Maybe I'll get some pics after the weekend.

For now though, some more interesting machining work:

This looks like it is from Aliens - awesome! Check out the sparks - kinda neat.

The block, lower and upper intakes and intercooler are getting painted Ford Grey as per Tooky's block as this is a good colour for a White/Grey truck.

Only 4 weeks before I am back in the UK to play with the truck. Can't wait!

You said the 80e sounds perfect the way it is. Has the truck run already with it and now the engine is a new project?

Re: 4L80E arrived today

Before you put the pan on, make sure you test fit & adjust the oil dipstick tube. It usually hits the 4 bolt caps.
After I destroyed my first dipstick tube trying to make it fit, I ground a shallow groove into the cap where the tube hits to minimize the amount of bending the tube.

lol - I wish!!! I am doing an awful lot at once. I meant the capabilities and performance of the 4L80e sound perfect and that I don't think I will need paddle shifters.

Hoping to build the engine up then get the trans in. There are so many areas where this could cause me headaches but to be honest I don't have much interest in anything else and love a challenge - this will certainly be a big one!

4C FED - thanks for that. I thnk I remember hearing it somwehere before as well but had forgotten.

I hope I have not bitten off more than I can chew with all this. 6 months should be long enough to get it all going...I hope!

Some more pics of after the crank got tuftrided. Not very exciting but kind of interesting and it is still progress.

Only 16 days left out here thank God.

Tuftriding, similar to nitriding:

Block is ready for assembly. Hopefully have some pics early next week. Found some Ford Grey enamel but apparently it needs baking at 95 degrees C before becoming chemically resistant. We shall see.
