Not sure. I never checked mine outside the truck. Was your truck purchased used? Maybe someone installed the box already?

according to the following thread, people are seeing substantial differences in the ZQ8 boxes. this sux as i purchased the box for an increase in steering response.

is there any way to indentify these externally, to see if my original box was a ZQ8?

Might want to check with Dave (dgoodhue). I sold him a box a couple years ago and he contacted me about the same thing. I think once he installed it, you could then tell it was the quicker ratio.

not questioning that it's a zq8, i'm interested in why some are different.

i just finished installation and it's slightly over 2.5 turns lock-to-lock installed, which is the same as the one i removed.

i can't rule out that the one i removed wasn't a zq8. i didn't notice any difference when driving, other than the replacement be much tighter.

could someone with a stock box check the turns lock-to lock (installed and removed if possible) and give us a baseline?

sounds to me like you might have had a zq8 in there possibly with higher milage.

Re: (3) 2001 zq8 quick ratio steering box's $140 shipped each

yeah my stock Ty gear box had alittle over 4 turns L to L, and the ZQ8 i got from this thread earler this year had alittle under 3 turns L to L, andman what a differeance that one turn makes when out on the road, i had always dreamed of steering that tight, i want to pick up one more of these for my Bravada, but have to wait till the funds flow alittle more freely.

But if you want to let go of the one you just bought for cheap, LMK.

If it comes down to it that you think you have a zq8 send it back for a refund, no biggie.

Re: (3) 2001 zq8 quick ratio steering box's $140 shipped each

I've bought several parts from spooldup now and no complaints.

I bought the zq8 back in April or May. Very satisfied. Install was real easy. Motor was out at the time. I noticed a difference right away after we got the motor in. Just swap pittman arms and you're good. I need an alignment but that's about it. No an ounce of play in the wheel now.

Thanks spool.

thanks for the offer! i wish everyone was as easy to deal with as you.

i'll keep it...it's tighter than "virgin gnat booty"...feels like a new truck.

for the record...i'm not blaming anyone other than myself. i should have done my research. spooldup's zq8 boxes are TOP NOTCH  and he is and excellent person to deal with.

There are a bunch of positive reasons to install one of these. First is that 1-2 inches of play when you first turn your wheel left or right is gone. Second the ratio is tighter so it's less turns lock to lock and third it helps with the wandering the syty's suffer from especially when you upgrade the steering shaft as well.

hey ashman..i want one of these now soo iv been researching it a bit,and iv found a possible reason why there may be a difference in the boxes...maybe.

from what iv read, the stock s10 blazer/pu boxes are a straight 17:1 ratio.
the extended cab s10 boxes are are either 15 or 13:1 variable ratio box

sooo...with that in mind...zq8 standard cab extremes, and zq8 extended cab extremes, could have different ratios boxes??
still looking into it...
