Re: BullySyclone
I must chime in as I have been following this issue over several threads. Since I can't go to the Nats, I can get a glimpse of what it may be like (and frankly, it does not look all that inviting). I enjoy this community and their sincere love of a vehicle which I fell in love with when it first came out!
I can see why Bully Sy would want to defend his friend, a friend who was simply asking a few questions out of concern for the safety of his friend (though "street racing" is hardly safe) and concerned that his friend might be disqualified. I can also see why you would be concerned that the overseas gentlemen may have an unfair advantage if somehow his rig does not have to qualify under NHRA requisites while you would have to comply.
If his truck and yours are not compliant and you can't be allowed to race - everyone losses! Of course that would not be known initially unless the track is aware of your capability. (These guys do this for a living though so . . ) At least you all can see these rides up close and personal. If, however, the NHRA regs do not apply for this specific Nat, and/or this overseas gentlemen's ride is compliant with all requisite regulations, what does anyone have to lose? Unless they are a) overly concerned about a racer's welfare (since street racing is more than a hobby, that can't apply) or b) there is a concern of an unfair advantage taken by someone who has not complied with requisite NHRA regulations, which may give them an edge due to reduced weight, etc. (this seems more obvious to me at least).
In any event, though it is a great thing to come to the support of a friend you must see from an objective point of view that it looks rather suspicious that this has become an issue so close to the time when these vehicles are going to the Nats.
Although it would be an exercise in futility if you are turned down at the gates of Kansas you can still enjoy the Nats and the company.
As an aside - It does appear logical that the regulations would apply to this Nat - even if it is a private venture, and even if the track obtains releases from all involved not to sue, you can bet your sweet bippy that if someone gets hurt and it is attributable to not following the NHRA regs, that track will nevertheless get sued and I can almost guarantee the track would lose. We have become a society of lawsuits and people who do not want to assume the responsibility for their own actions. Even the most noble of us would more than likely weaken at the thought of being able to sue and win a large sum of money because we crushed our vertebrae which could have been prevented if the track would have followed the NHRA rules and required a cage.
If you really want to be safe and not get disqualified, get legal then you have nothing to worry about. If you’re concerned that somehow the overseas gentlemen has been given special dispensation and thus is not playing fair, this community would be able to recognize that disadvantage. A record is really not a record if it comes with an asterisks. (Just ask Mr. Bonds a few years from now).
For this person to come all the way to the US I would think that they would want to win the fastest Sy comp legitimately, otherwise, why even come?
That’s all I have to say. If I have bored you, sorry, drink some more beer, you’ll forget. If I have insulted anyone by voicing (actually penning) my opinion - Eat Me! :2cents: Time for my stoggie now.
