Gas in the oil

Re: Gas in the oil

Just an FYI, check to see if you have a fabco around you. We get our oil sample kits there for $12 and they are postage prepaid.

I agree with Dave P that I doubt the fpr could leak that much fuel, I think it's the ecm keeping the injectors open while cranking so I would try a different dist. Especially now since you are taking it out anyway to do the headgaskets.
Good luck I hope it turns out great for you :D

I will look into fabco and I agree with Dave as well. I will definitely be putting the stock distributor back in and having the injectors checked while they're out. It never ends with this truck. I've been saying for the last 6 years I'll really enjoy when/if I ever get it right. Lol

Re: Gas in the oil

Well I just pressurized number 4 cylinder (where I thought I had coolant) and boom, pushed coolant out the radiator cap. Well looks like I'll be pulling heads and putting this issue on the back burner. Or maybe it's coolant in the oil and I'm idiot. I've seen milky oil before and mine doesn't look milky and smells like gas. Owell time to pull a head.... Or start a big fire and call Grundy insurance.

I am so sorry to hear that :(

Thanks Marc. Pretty sick to my stomach about it myself. The only good news is 1,3,5 leaked down less than 8% so I only have to worry about pulling one side. I know I should do both. I'm just going to pull one side and see what happened. My worries are a cracked block or head. Part of me is hoping when I had the motor freshened he didn't put cometic gaskets back in. I finding it hard to believe it blew a cometic

Cometic's require a specific finish on the block and heads. Be sure to check that while the head is off.

Don I am aware that there is a certain finish RA? For the block and heads using cometics. However I had a machine shop freshened the motor so I can only assume they did it right. Any way for me to check while I have it off? Any work that needs to be done in going to do myself now that I have a big garage to work in.

Re: Gas in the oil

The RA is the correct measure, in this case, RA50 (not sure what it stands for but I remember it as Roughness Average :)). It's almost a mirror finish. You would need to be sure both the heads and the block were that smooth. Only way to tell would be if you had an exposed surface to inspect. It may be rusted (minor surface rust) by now if it's been a while. Not sure. I wouldn't waste time trying to find out until you have that head off.

I would be stunned if you had blown a gasket in the small time you'd had it and the little time it's run. The good news is you caught this before filling your cylinder with coolant and trashing everything. Chin up!

Re: Gas in the oil

The RA40 will look like a mirror finish like Mark said. I only did my heads with that finish. I cleaned the block as best as I could (junk yard motor). E-rue said he didn't have any problem do it that way (convinced me to try it). I have driven about 5500 miles since installation.

Tooky one blew his Victor head gaskets around 500mile after he did his Vortec swap.

Re: Gas in the oil

Could always be worse I suppose. Pretty confident it didn't hurt anything internally. The question is what went, cracked/warped head, gasket or block. Crossing my fingers it's gasket or head because that's a relatively easy fix. If it's the block there will be a super clean typhoon for sale. Lol

Going to have injectors checked while they're off and put the stock distributor back in. More fun as usual!

Well... didn't see that coming.

Edit: No, I wasn't being sarcastic, I really didn't see that coming. Lots of possible problems (tune, injectors, power issues, distributor even maybe, etc) but didn't think you were pulling water into the cylinder(s).

Re: Gas in the oil

I'm voting gasket. It's important that the heads be torqued in steps and in sequence. If the assembler didn't do that then loosing #4 might be the one to go. That is pure SWAG though. :rotf:

Usually, but not always, head gaskets blow between cylinders (their weakest point) and there is no water passage there. The symptoms, of course would be low compression in that pair not just one cyl. I am very curious what you do find.

Thanks for keeping us posted as you work on this.

I'm curious as well. I've seen gaskets go in between cylinders many times but compression and leakage is good in all 6 so that rules that out (plus like you said no water passages there). I am fully aware and torque pattern and torquing in increments with cometics especially. Just had to put gaskets on my 602 race engine because it got lean and burned out in between the cylinders. I didn't assemble this motor so I can't confirm it was done properly. I'll be pulling the head on Sunday. I'll keep everyone posted

Matt pull the valve cover and see if the head bolts are loose.

Nick I could never get that lucky. Remember that ONE time I drove it and it overheated on the way to frank's meet.... Yeah that's what I'm thinking.
