Handling info

Re: Handling info

I don't know what the geometry is like on the 4wd chassis but the camber curve on the 2wd is bad. You can run tall balljoints and shorter upper control arms on 2wds to help correct it and raise the roll center but tire wear is still horrible on the outside of the fronts. In about 25 runs I basically destroyed the tires I bought from Mark a while back.

I run 42-44 psi front and 32-35 rear with C5 ZO6 wheels/tires to help with the understeer and rear traction issues. The alignment has lots of negative camber and close to zero toe to help with turn in. Adjustable shocks helped too - I'm running HAL stocker stars. It's nice to be able to dial them back for normal driving.

When the guys did the auto-x at Nats last year the body roll looked pretty bad from the sidelines - I don't think I would sacrifice the larger front SB. Is the front bar 33mm? If not, the later model 4wds came with one and that's as big as they get. ES makes poly bushings for it and fabbing endlinks with heim joints is pretty easy from what I've read.

There's a few guys building 4wds on protourings10.com but I think most are members here as well.

The stock syclone/ typhoon bar is 33mm. Although in my opinion going to a 2nd gen bar is a good upgrade since it runs an end link style bar. Which then you could either run a heim joint or shorten the end link to get the sway bar more level to the suspension. On one of my trucks I actually flip the sway bar to the top side of the control arm with a shorten end link for better geometry.

These trucks do have a lot of body roll when, the thing to remember though is these trucks came factory with torsion bars, and most of the trucks out there still had them. When running coil overs though it eliminates a ton of body roll right away on these chassis.

As for the tall ball joint options, I am not really aware of any. Jeff maybe able to chime in here on his arms but have they been shortened up at all? I know the ball joint angle has been corrected, and I believe they have been just so it can be aligned but not positive.

One other thing to think about is adding frame braces, as you have seen at a drag strip especially Syclones tend to twist a lot. Its great for added traction in a straight line but not so helpful in the tight twisties of a road course or autox.

I know second gen s10's with the zq8 suspension package came with an added frame brace between the front box mounts. This could be a cheap junk yard option, or get out the welder and build one. There is also the fully boxed frame, but that does add a bit of weight and sounds like you are putting the truck on a diet.

Re: Handling info

I'm sure you could build an appropriate tall balljoint with Howe parts but it's hard to say if it would help without knowing what the factory geometry is. Some of the g-body and 2wd guys use aftermarket UCAs that accept a full size truck balljoint with the same specs as the Howe's for 1/2 the price.

Re: Handling info

I have a Bell tech 5525 1.25" typhoon rear bar coming for it. I will set it up and see how it works. I am sure there will be a ton of tweaking. It will be nice just to have it move under its own power.I am going to a time attach this Monday in my 2wd ZQ8 colorado so that will give me a taste.

If I am in love I will be doing either a trianglated 4 link in the rear or IRS over the winter.

I need need to start doing some reading on this stuff as its all new to me. Which is nice because it is getting me interested again.

Re: Handling info

I am very interested in an IRS system for a Typhoon. I thought about finding one out of a corvette or finding a conversion. I know Jeff has done good things with a 4 link! For some reason my truck handles better when the front is lower than the rear. I have the rpm coil over with 3/8" set back plates and a rear sway bar. The AWD drive seems to limit the ability to get the rear end to come around. The truck just wants to push through turns. For some reason I just picture your Syclone going around in left circles faster and faster and then it tips over! tell me I am wrong?

If you do go irs look into the Lincoln mark 8 rear suspension. You will have to re-drill and gear but it comes with an aluminum 8.8 center section. Otherwise you can get them out of Cougars or Thunderbird as well and just pick up the mark 8 center.

Stratotech. Where do I go to watch for teh autocross events. I would bring the colorado out for now.

The website for event announcements is www.mrheavyfoot.com/forum

The next event is May 30 at the Griesbach parade square (where nats went last year) and there's a tentative event schedule on the site that lists the rest of them for the summer. They're $25 to enter if you're not an ASA member and you usually have to preregister since they fill up quick. Preregistration is required for the Nameo events since you need to get put on the security list to enter the base.

Re: Handling info

Sounds like you have all the bases covered, and are just checking off your list.

Doesnt seem like you have actually TESTED your setup yet, since the powerplant isnt installed and running yet. You will probably be very happy with what you have ---

Re: Handling info

I personally love my ladder bar and coil over setup with the rear sway . Ask dobrick how good it handles , i think he almost crapped himself on the testdrive .lol

Whatever you decide on , the 4 link , irs , or ladder bars , i know youll have a blast in that thing . I cant wait to see some pics and videos .

Re: Handling info

Nolan,

Give me a call and I'll tell you everything you need to know to turn your Ty into a corner carver. 775-624-0177.

Looking for some info on setting up my truck for going in circles. I have a rear bar of unknown origin coil over front suspention and stock front bar. Should I be looking at the larger front bar from Bell tech? Tires will be Invo 275/40/18 and 325/30/19

Do these truck tend to under steer? Any info on size of rear bars?

Thanks

Nolan

Yep been out twice now. There is another one this monday but I will not be able to make. it. The way my time is going right now I doubt I will have the sy ready this year but I will keep giving the Colorado a work out.

Hey Nolan, did you end up running that time attack a few weeks ago? How did it go?

Re: Handling info

That would be great thanks!!

i might do the 4 link right away. I was going to wait but I am better off just getting it all done at once. I need to clean out the garage so I can pull the box off.

Re: Handling info

I would really give Adam Auerbach of HPT a call. By far one the of the coolest guys to talk to & get info from. He helped with advice on steering because I am also going with paddle shifted idea. Another thing that no one mentioned is the actual flexing of the chasse. Once you run some R rated tires like Toyo RA1 you will notice a ton of grip but man that thing will flex like crazy your bed will travel almost 2" from side to side between the cab & bed. No Joke. So my advise is call Adam. My Syclone is going on the frame jig to get it as straight as possible then off to RPM or Fabtech. Mike has a Syclone at the shop with full roll cage & bars going threw the cab wall in to bed & looks low profile not as good as running them toward the top of the cage but I like the low profile. Anyhow when they lifted that truck by one corner that thing barely moved stayed solid as one piece (try doing that with stock Sy) So as I said the best thing to do is some chasse upgrades & fabrication then you will see the Coil overs & suspension go to work & take advantage of those R rated tires.
