Pulled engine today and found... (pics)

We'll today all in one shot Scott K (UR50SLO), My stepdad, and I pulled the rebuilt engine (specs in sig) and dissembled the engine. The engine was rebuilt last year by us and was I just started driving again early this summer. On my way to syty homecoming the oil pressure dropped quickly so I had it towed home. Upon starting it again we heard the fan belt noise and I have an electric which meant most likely I spun a rod bearing.

First a couple pics of the day..

Here are pictures of the oil pump where it broke in half, you can easily see the casting broke:

Upon disassambly the Melling M55A Oil Pump, was broke right in half. The oil pickup was just sitting in the bottom of the pan when we removed it. The bearings were toast, some of the rods look like they may be toast as well, also the crank is most likely trash.

I had put nearly 1000 miles on the engine before this happened. No matter what it sucks but it will be rebuilt.. Plans are to take block, crank, rods, etc to machine shop this week to find the extent of the damage and plan from there.

edit: removed pics of the damage for the time being.. I am not trying to make Melling look bad in anyway so I'll keep this thread updated as time goes on.

I think they are South Side Lift or something, a now defunct out of business company. Do a search on South Side and you should find some info.

Yep that 55a was make with alot thinner casting and that is the 3rd one that i saw break like that. If you compare the 2 side by side what a diffrent in the thickness.

This shit really sucks. Not only do you gotta worry about detonation but also if you got the right oil pump.

Ed Hess had this problem a while back and posted about it.

I am seeing the same symptoms with my sy, at nats I lost oil pressure 60 miles from the hotel. I had to be towed back also. The motor has less th 2k on rebuild, with a new melling oil pump. I am willing to bet that I have the same problem, it would explain why I loose pressure at higher rpm's and gain pressure as the rpm's come down. Well to say the least it has to come apart, I am pretty sure I lost some bearings.

Melling has been covering failur's. Now it's been a while and I don't know if they have any time limit etc. simular to an O.E.M. service recall but I would for sure at least try and raise a stink if they say no because as posted above, they are well aware of this problem and paid for more than a few rebuild (parts only, no labor... I think).
