UPDATE: IT RUNS! Another Noob! My "new" Ty from Chicago

Hey everybody! I have recently inherited a *basketcase* of a Ty. The Typhoon I am getting (haven't picked it up yet, doing so in 3 days) has not run in something like 8-9 years. The prev owner blew up the trans for like the 4th time, and said it was enough and parked it. It was sitting in a garage for 7ish years, and then was parked outside in all the elements for about 2 years. I'm in Chicago, so it would get snow, rain, and heavy sun on it. I didn't know what a Typhoon was until about 6 months ago, but found out, started to get into the market of them and noticed the one sitting outside just a few blocks down. Turns out the owner is my dads old friend, and he is giving me the car. I have some pics, and I am sure I will need some help getting her back on the road and throughout the repair process. She has pretty bad paint, has got some some rust, and doesn't run (as far as I know), drive, or even roll. I'm putting a battery in it and gonna try to start it, and it isnt as if the fuel lines and such dont have to be replaced already, so who cares if a bit of old gas goes through it. If I can I'll drive it home. PO says it just doesn't leave first, but that will be enough to get me the 2 blocks home. Thanks and I cant wait to have the car, and to be a part of this amazing forum! Sorry I went dark there for a while, but the seller was sorta getting cold feet about the whole deal, but that ended up subsiding and BAM! The truck is in my garage. To respond to you Sean, yes it was the one on prospect (Black/Black). Here are some pictures of the truck: (and lets see if i can post a picture correctly...)

It is worth noting that there was some animal nesting in bank A around the injectors and there are vac lines going around..not sure if they are remotely correct or what

Here is the front driver fender..Its pretty far gone and the passenger side is about the same.
Worth noting interior is very clean. There is even more rust (nothing super major) I am hoping nobody says it is too far gone...I know these trucks are a labor of love..The game plan tomorrow is to try to get it running. Another thing: what does everyone reccomend for a truck that hasnt ran in like 7ish years and not been on the road on like 10? Like what should I replace just to see if it runs? Then what after that?After that (somewhere in the future) it will get a trans, replace the gonzo body panels, and paint the whole thing
So what do you guys think? Would you say it is worth $1500 I paid?

Yes. You could part that truck out and have enough money for a down payment on a decent Ty. This one is going to be a tough (re: expensive) save. If the front "under cladding" looks like that, chances are other parts do too.

Between the cladding and the interior bits, you could probably double your money.

Do you think with the right money in the right places I'll end up on top? Like if I go and fix all the rust, get new body panels, clean up the underside, and paint the thing, would I make money after all is said and done? I'm not even talking about the mechanics side, but let's say it runs/drives great. For me, parting out is sorta the last resort. I really don't want to part it out for a number of reasons.

I would bet money by looking at the outer portion of the body that the body mounts are toast. The only ones you can buy replacements for are the front cab mounts. Expect to pay a body shop around a grand just to replace front body mounts only. If the other rear mounts are bad they will need to be fabricated from sheet metal, that equals big money. With rust it's the stuff you don't see that is the problem.

I've been down the vin swap road. Almost went to jail over it. There are special rivets that hold a vin plate to the lower dash area. I'm sure that they can be acquired. There is paper work and procedures involved in swapping out a vin tag. You do a garage swap and the wrong people find out, it is illegal and you can go to jail. I speak from experience not hear say.

Swapping VIN numbers is illegal. Don't listen to people who tell you otherwise. They won't be the ones going through the justice system. Looks like too much work to fix IMO

Truck doesn't run?

Lots and lots of work ahead if so. Not trying to steer you away from your project. I bought my syclone and it was literally packed in plastic interlocking bins. I had to un pack everything and buy my own containers and repack it all. The seller wanted his bins. ( everything was apart when I bought the truck) I bought my typhoon and it was in similar condition as yours. I just decided to stick with it. I recently ended up selling my typhoon because I had some shop do some work and it was short lived from there.

What ever you end up doing is up to you. I'd suggest focus on engine check it all out make sure it runs? Then as my friend good old Barry would say " put the lipstick on later " ( meaning cosmetics ).

UPDATE: It runs! Got some rubber fuel line in place of the rotted out metal s**t for a temporary solution. I didn't want to put more money into getting/making metal fuel line so that was my solution. Also worth noting I replaced the fuel filter, and added some new gas. Obviously I changed the oil and filter before any of this. Tried starting it 2 nights ago, and no beans, then yesterday morning I walked into my garage and was like screw it, what could go wrong? Sure enough, 2nd attempt it fired right up. A huge cloud of dust flew off the engine and (luckily) that was the most exciting thing. I was monitoring things like engine temp, oil press, etc while I waited to see if it came down to idle, and it did. At first there was a check engine light, but that went off after a few mins. It idles pretty good at about 750RPM. I say pretty good because when I was looking at all the extra parts the truck came with, and I noticed a used little packet of cam installation lube..so maybe it has a cam in it? The idle was like lopey, very consistent. The RPMs would go up and down about 75RPM. Example It would be at 775 RPM and then it would drop down to 700, then come right back up, and keep doing this over and over. I've cold started it a couple times and it starts right up. So here is where I need a little bit of advice. I want to flush the turbo intercooler coolant and engine coolant. I tried to drain the engine radiator last night, and only got about 7 quarts (filled up my oil drain pan) out of it. So, my question is how to drain the rest of the coolant in the engine, as well as how (and with what flushing product) should I go about flushing both systems? I've heard horror stories of how the coolant tubes going to the turbo were clogged up, etc etc. Should I worry about something like that? Thanks again everyone!

The coolant systems of the OEM intercooler and the engine are almost completely separate. The only common point is the puke tank. Unless you see rust in the coolant of either system, I would just drain whatever comes out, refill, and move on. The drain valve for the intercooler system is on the front of the lower heat exchanger. You can see it by looking under the bumper.

The coolant systems of the OEM intercooler and the engine are almost completely separate. The only common point is the puke tank. Unless you see rust in the coolant of either system, I would just drain whatever comes out, refill, and move on. The drain valve for the intercooler system is on the front of the lower heat exchanger. You can see it by looking under the bumper.

I understand they are separate systems. And yeah, the reason I'm going through all this trouble was the liquid coming out of the engine rad was almost opaque.

Keep in mind the trucks call for or like the Dex cool brand name product. It is a orange color to start with and can startle some appearing as a " rust " color.

To drain the block you need to remove the lower fitting on the turbo line which is down near passenger side lower oil pan. That would drain any suspect sludge/sediment out.

So are you saying the engine coolant goes into the turbo, as opposed to using coolant from the charge air system? Very interesting. Thanks

GM didn't begin using Dex Cool til somewhere about 1996. So I doubt his truck has that in it, and they certainly couldn't call for it since it didn't exist when the trucks were built.

Engine coolant cools the turbo, yes. Using fluid that is designed to cool the intake charge would mean the intercooler would get hot and heat the air or at the very least, not work nearly as well at cooling it.
