VORTEC heads?

Hello

I have to ask this question???

I have been reading some posts and they say that they have upgraded to VORTEC heads.... I thought that TYs had vortec heads originally? Are they a newer yr heads? I did search for a few hours but I could not find anything as far as the year the heads were used from?

Just curious... Im new to the TY SY phenomenon...

Also,, is the TY/SY engine different from a stock S10? Im only asking this because I have secured a 94 Jimmy that was rolled and I wanted to use the engine and what ever else will work.. I dont need them now. I just want to make sure I have them ready when I need them...

TY

Re: VORTEC heads?

syty's have stock LB4 heads, same as the other s-10 TBI engines,

1992 they went to CPI which has vortec written on the intake, these are not "true" vortec's in a sense, they are improved from LB4's, they are L35's, L35's you can identify then fromthe brow on the top of the intake port, this was for the injector (port injection) on these engines.

In 1996, the true Vortec came to both the 350 and the 4.3, these heads eliminated the EGR, and have different intake bolt patterns. The ports are taller and they have heart shaped combustion chanbers. These are the superior steel heads. However the syty intake needs the intake ports to be welded to add extra material to the top of the ports in order to create a seal. The heads are also commonly drilled for the old intake's bolt pattern.

WOW.....

Thanx for the prompt and awesome detailed response...

Much apreciated..

Re: VORTEC heads?

Check out this thread for information on what is required. It is NOT a bolt on mod by any means. However, vortecs flow close to 50% more CFM than the stockers so, it's a worthwhile modification for the folks who are hardcore.

Too bad this is a lot of misinfo
92 were true vortec heads, but didn't have the higher ports and better chambers, as the later ones. So actually there were 1st and 2nd gen vortec heads. If you don't think they were vortec, pull an axhaust valve out and look.
They didn't eliminate the EGR until late 2001 and they did it with a cam profile change

Re: VORTEC heads?

ok, I'm curious. what am I looking for when I pull the exhaust valve out?
.
I've also been of the impression that "real" vortecs didn't arrive until '96. So maybe technically you can call the '92-'95 vortecs also, but since you have a different intake pattern and markedly improved chambers starting at '96 its much easier to call the '92 up just an improvement on a regular head IMO... unless you tell me more.

Re: VORTEC heads?

I hate to break this to you but I have 98 Vortec heads and they do not have an EGR passage.

Sorry it was suppose to say intake valve. You will see the eyebrow in the downstream of the port that causes the intake charge to swirl down in to the chamber, like a vortec. Hence the name

I hate to break the news to you, but here is a set of 2002 heads and they still have the EGR port on them

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Chev...c0.m245&_trkparms=72:1171|65:12|39:1|240:1318

Why don't you try looking up an EGR valve for a 2001 S10 with a 4.3 or you want me to find it for you?

OK dip shit, then why don't you explain to me why my 98 heads have no egr port? Lets hear it poconohoe. I cant sit here and tell you that 02 heads didnt have a port. But you obviously think you know everything and you said egr didnt go away until late 2001. Well, if my heads are from 98, and they have no egr port, then what is there for you to think you know here?

x2. Only thing true around here is that he is a retard. Later model egr's went with a riser tube from the exhaust manifold if I remember correctly. The heads, from what I have seen, have NO EGR PASSAGE.

Re: VORTEC heads?

Jumping on the BS wagon here, I have 98 true vortecs, no egr. Oh, cc is kidney shaped, no one mentioned that the "favorable" vortec (sbc and 4.3) were redesigned from the mid 90's and incorporated the kidney shape to unshroud the valves. Does this sound like I know what "I'm" talking about.

Re: VORTEC heads?

ok, since my engine is being assembled in my sunroom right now I had to take a look. I dont know exactly how to read the date codes but they are 772 vortecs from '96-'98 and there is no exhaust crossover port in them. There is an indentation but doesn't go anywhere, looks exactly like the ones in the ebay ad you posted joe. if you look closely those aren't passages, they stop about 1/2" in.
.
and yeah, I know I'm a Tiny bit redneck for having the engine in the house.
garage coming soon I hope.

Re: VORTEC heads?

I think there was still an egr up until '01 but it was on the front of the intake

OK, I know about the vortecs head from 1996 on, but I don't know the answer to this. For those of us that live in a undeniably screwed up state for all the crazy smog laws that are here. If you know the answer to this question please post up and help us out.

If in the location of the 1/2" indentation where the exhaust crossover would be if you were to drill a hole here, could you make the EGR operable for our trucks?

It's all good after all you need a clean room to put it together right. It nice to know that I'm not the only one that does things like this:tup:.
