Re: No Forward Gears!!!!
IIRC, the governor and valvebody are specific to the Sytys. These transmissions will last if you don't beat on them on a regular basis or race the truck much. It doesn't matter if the transmission you get is rated for 200 horsepower or 2000, the combination of high torque and AWD makes the transmission the inherint weak link. Many people have aftermarket coolers, deep pans, temp gauges, etc to try to prolong the life of these. The 700R4 is a very, very good transmission, but it wasn't designed for this application. If you want something that will outlast the truck, go with the 4L80E conversion, but be prepared to spend several hours and around 3-5K for it. A good rebuild by a vender on here will last a long time, since many refuse to do "economy" builds, and only use the best parts for the money. Can you get it stuffed full of race goodies? Yes. Advisable on a street truck? No. Consult with one of the builders here and they will guide you through it. It's also a good time to look into a Gilbert front propshaft, since the stock ones are failure prone as well. Good luck with the truck, and try not to take any of the rookie hasseling too seriously, we've all been there
