2nd day with the typhoon, thought the coverter was unlocking but hindsight being 20/20 i now know the bitch was slipping. Stopped at a redlight after i felt it slipping took off and on the 1-2 shift she made a poof noise and no more forward gears. I do have reverse. Any input would be great.

Time for a rebuild..... and some jackstands. Same thing happened to me when I bought mine driving then bang no more forward .

Bad choice for a driver buying a TY! I made the same mistake.... Same thing happened to me! Cost me $2500 to get my trans built to handle my power. Definitely take is somewhere who does sy/ty trans work because with a standard 700r4 rebuild you will be going through this again. Expect to pay a minimal of $1500. I would say whoever sold you the truck knew this was an issue and you got hosed! :2cents:

i honestly dont belive he new there was a tranny problem the previous owner before the guy i bought it from had it rebuilt less than 2k mi ago. Whats so special about a syty build... so i couldnt buy a 700r4 rated at 500hp for an 4wd and it be okay , they over a unlimited mile warrany

There are alternative transmissions for you but they cost. Expect around 5k for a 4L80E. But almost bullet proof once it's done right.

I am deffinatly not one to talk, so I am wondering the same thing. I am assuming the reason is the turbo creates so much torque that the trans quickley heats up at a very fast rate before you take off, 500 hp or not its just a matter of handleing the aftermath of the SyTy's power?

You have to love when somebody new comes to the forumn, and ends up getting schooled on life when you buy a syty. How many miles on your "driver"?It was rebuilt before, now a question would be, is it the original tranny that got put back in there or was it just a 700r that went back into it? Good luck on finding somebody who builds tranny's and gives a warranty for these things.

There are some differences internally due to the AWD nature of the vehicle but I don't fully understand them.
John Waller has done good trans builds in the past as well as other people on here. You'll need to search but I'm sorry for your loss and this place has all the answers even if the delivery can initially seem a bit prickly
Good luck getting it fixed - shouldn't be too hard for you.

IIRC, the governor and valvebody are specific to the Sytys. These transmissions will last if you don't beat on them on a regular basis or race the truck much. It doesn't matter if the transmission you get is rated for 200 horsepower or 2000, the combination of high torque and AWD makes the transmission the inherint weak link. Many people have aftermarket coolers, deep pans, temp gauges, etc to try to prolong the life of these. The 700R4 is a very, very good transmission, but it wasn't designed for this application. If you want something that will outlast the truck, go with the 4L80E conversion, but be prepared to spend several hours and around 3-5K for it. A good rebuild by a vender on here will last a long time, since many refuse to do "economy" builds, and only use the best parts for the money. Can you get it stuffed full of race goodies? Yes. Advisable on a street truck? No. Consult with one of the builders here and they will guide you through it. It's also a good time to look into a Gilbert front propshaft, since the stock ones are failure prone as well. Good luck with the truck, and try not to take any of the rookie hasseling too seriously, we've all been there :tup:

Except I was pulling away from a light easy when mine went. That was transmission number one. I'm on my third one now... gkrcr882 pretty much gave you the Cliff's notes version on the "glass transmissions" that we have in these trucks. The biggest mistake that you can make is to allow a transmission shop to "trade" your transmission for one "off the shelf" (shops do this to shorten the turnaround time). After that happens, you will no longer have your syty specific parts.

Or Give Helpful advise insted of trying to kick me while im down. If you read my sig this was supposed to be a fun "driver" (as you qouted) since i dont feel like drivin my corvette everyday. I have several questions and by no means do i claim to know shit about theese trucks. Now if you had questions on an fbody or vette i could probably help you out with the ls1 realm, but certainley would not take jabs at you for you car breaking two days into owning it.....
