Re: 1992 Typhoon 0539 rebuild

any progress? except buying stuff?

fuel pumpo changed

4L80E and trans case placed on the jack under the truck

waiting to blast accessory brackets for alternator and other parts before assembly.

Still trying to work out what thread my vortec heads are so I can order the damn rocker studs.

I have got Crane Gold 1.6RRs to go in...just need the poly locks and the rocker studs....

I got all the bolts I had from the disassembly and placed them in a sheet of cardboard so I know what I have.

Why do I have 16 allen head bolts? Manifold somwehere?

Also, how many plugs are there for the coolant passages on the heads?

Also, how many plugs are there for the coolant passages on the heads? dunno, there is 1 coolant temp sensor that goes into it, and if you have a watercooled turbo you need to have 1 there. the rest you need to plug off.

Re: 1992 Typhoon 0539 rebuild

So I did a bit of work on my Ty the last two days.

In a nutshell since I got back from Iraq I have been ****ing busy and not sure what I was doing. I have trying to find a place to work on the Ty as well as leave the Army and move all my stuff from my base back to my parents which has been a real distraction.

The Ty has a new home though and today I managed some real progress.

I have been waiting on getting the lower intake powdercoated grey to match the rect of the block and accessory brackets and today it arrived with a whole bunch of goodies that I had bought from stores in the US recently.

New home, still on stands of course :D

I decided I should probably assemble as much as I could so when the lower arrived I had made some other progress.

It actually looks like an engine again!

This is a shot of the lower "naked", not installed and with no parts on it.

I have had a few issues the last day or two and I am hoping someone can chime in and maybe help/reassure me.

The first one was the misalignment of the pas side header to the turbo. Even with a manifold spreader it just wouldn't line up properly. Some overly aggressive filing on my part probably did more harm than good as the passage nearest the turbo was actually exposed to the bolt hole. I ended up sealing it with washers etc but I guess I am in the market for another pas side header. Might get a custom one made.

I think it is ridiculous that they should fit so poorly and am convinced the poor alignment and the tension they are fitted under is in no small part responsible for the amount of cracked manifolds we have seen.

I hope it will be ok for now.

The next pain in the ass was the GT35R and the AC. I asked around before I went ahead and bought this combo, sticking with the 3" housing and I even posted a thread askling about the install. Nobody piped up that it is a TOTAL pain in the proverbial.

After some aggressive cutting of the newly blasted and painted bracket, I JUST got the turbo aligned. clocked and connected. I did a mock fit before I was going to add the Ultra Copper RTV and tried to install the compressor. You can see from the pics just how difficult that is.

After some more searching, I found a thread where the OP mentioned having to grind away at the compressor but he didn't mention how much. I have ordered a 5mm spacer for the GT35R in the hope that it will give me some breathing space but you can see from the pic how much the compressor sticks out.

I also broke my dipstick - any suggestions for a relacement?

I have a bunch of searches to do and a few more misc items to buy but I really think I have broked then back of the purchasing part of this project and now have to just put the hours in.

Tomorrow I am finishing up blasting and painting the fuel rails and all the pulleys etc. I have tonnes to do and can't wait!

Re: 1992 Typhoon 0539 rebuild

I have L35 heads with stock manifolds and never had a problem. Turbo side goes on fine, but the other is a pain. Also you should not use the gaskets since they always blow out. I always go metal on metal with no leaks.

Re: 1992 Typhoon 0539 rebuild

If you leave the exhuast manifold off for long period of time they shrink. I recommend bolting them to a set of spare set of heads if they are going to be off for a while or even they are going ot be baked with a coating. (The stock LB4 heads are atleast good for something :))

I had to grind my A/C Bracket with my PTE61 BB as well. I have the smaller TO4E cover as well (3" imnlet).

Re: 1992 Typhoon 0539 rebuild

I ordered that exact one but it's only 5mm. 5 of those comes to £80! Stacking them can't be good either!

Good to know someone went the spacer route

Any issues with the dp or anything else?

Just tuned into this. I cant believe how much you have done to that thing and still have motivation!
Keep up the good work. When you are done, you can start on mine! :) LOL. I wish I had your budget and time. I dont even have the time to do small jobs on it at the moment. The weather isn't helping either on that score though. Its bl**dy freezing out there and I have my MOT due. Dave
