Re: How to install stock arm coil overs

Well I am just getting into my rear coilover and smaller 13 gallon gas tank ( that took me a dam year to find) install so I am not really looking for any joyrides until my list is complete . I am close but not quite yet .

I do agree that the tubular arms are much lighter . I have only in seen in person the rpm brand on matt's sy and I could almost twirl them around my finger , where as the stockers could knock a bitch out real quick if your not careful . The top arms are closer in weight , but the bottoms are where the tubular arms lighten the load . On a street truck or daily driver 26 more pounds isnt really anything after already shedding 60 . Thats like the weight of a few gallons of gas .

I am not trying to push anyone from buying kits from Mike of Jeff , I am cool with both of them and they have both helped me out considerably over the 3 years of having my sy .If I had the extra dough , I would have bought an entire kit . But after the billet 4l80e , new frame swap/restore , built motor with ported vortecs, paint job ,and the never ending list of other mods , I had to cut back somewhere .Ok , really my wife said I had to cut back or I could sleep in my sy if I chose . LOL .

I would have gladly stayed with the stock arms for safety of knowing that they wont break. Where as the chromo arms have had cracking incidents in the past. Too late now that i've got the tubular kit now tho :p

i wouldnt mind doing a GP on this setup if someone can just verify the performance of this setup before 20 people buy parts they cant use. i have a shock/spring setup sitting here on the shelf, ready to go, if someone wants to be the guineypig.

Put it on a flatbed and tow it to a parking lot. Parking lots are private property. Just do it on a "dead" day at a Mall or University or something and drive it enough to see how it feels. That way you can get going quick enough to turn it and make it dip and put the suspension through it's paces. Then load it up and return home and get it up with the wheels off and see if anything rubbed or needs adjusting.

funny my wife has told me this on many times and i'm still sleeping in our house.

Side note - The 48 Chevy ( Can't remember ) had this exact set up on it and it drove and worked great.

I think there were posts by smaug and e-rue that are missing also .With the coilovers , when you slide them on the bolts at first , your going to see right away what will hit . Hold a grinder on that spot for a few seconds and your good to go . Worst case senario is you have to notch more than 2 spots .

I know I could do this in around an hour on another truck , if any locals at our next fast wrench meet wants to get this going . I cant imagine an outcome that would prevent these from working properly this way ,but I agree to shell out $$ for x amount of shocks to use , playing it safe is a good call .

Weird, my last post got deleted also, but I would be interested in a GP as well.

Re: How to install stock arm coil overs

Thanks to E-Rue at Turbotime for getting me the parts asap

I decided I wanted to go through with this.. I have always had issues with my suspension and have never been happy...

After doing this, there are a few things you need to know ahead of time:
-Removing the Torsion bars is NOT easy and you can spend hours fighting with them
-Removing the Torsion bar x-member is next to impossible if you have an ATR exhaust (infact mine is still in the truck, I decided to leave it in there for the time being)
-The QA1 coil-overs are very nice and very high quality

There are a few spots I'd suggest grinding down, but every truck is different so don't think these are going to bolt right in and you won't have to touch anything..

I'd suggest grinding the back end of the upper a-arm as on my passenger side it seems to hit the spring once in a long while...

At the moment I have a squeak at full flex (when the suspension drops) I think it is the axle shaft hitting the spring.. if it is then hopefully one will wear the other out without doing any harm and it won't be a problem any more as I attempted to move the spring as far away from the axle as possible.

The difference is impressive, the truck doesn't really feel like a truck anymore, currently it is REALLY bouncy, I need to spend more time adjusting it.. at the moment I need to go see my father and wish him a happy father's day.

When I have time I will post my pictures and some more details

I seem to have a camber issue with my passenger tire that I didn't have before, and my front end is REALLY low.. so far i've adjusted once and will have to at least 2 to 3 more times before everything is setup the way it probably should be...

Re: How to install stock arm coil overs

You need to tighten the springs lot more, my locking rings are 2.25" from the top thread of the shock body. I am at 27" or 27.5" of ride height

Re: How to install stock arm coil overs

Does anyone have a pic of the extension that RPM used to offer with these coil-overs?
