TYTILIDIE
METH HEAD
Re: Motor rebuild for 92TY#73
Got some more done. I got all my parts in to have the short block done. Still waiting on SCE to send me my titan's. Here are some pics of what I have done since last time:
Oil pump stud
I got a milodon pick up that bolts to the pump so I wont have to worry about it falling off anymore
Last time I got as far as the cam install. Here are the cam gears and chain installed
Now I have a beef with this thing. I got this cover from Summit and it didn't fit, I had to drill out the dowel holes and do a bunch of surfacing on the inside to get rid of excess casting material. Well, I get it on, and start to install the balancer and it kept pulling the seal lip inside. So I took another seal I had laying around that came with the timing cover gasket and noticed it was considerably thinner. Swapped it out and was good to go.
Installed my over priced balancer
Here is the timing pointer, also from Summit. This I also have a beef with. It amazes me that you actually have to modify this thing to get it to fit and it is made by the same company. You see, the corner of the timing cover is rounded inwards going from the mounting surface to the wall of the cover area. Well, the pointer, is 90*. So, you have to round off the inner edge of the pointer and take some meat off of the entire bottom area to get this thing to fit right:roll: It was kind of annoying and slowed me down but I did get over it.
Here is where my daughter tells me the Typhoon is sick and gives it medicine
This is the adapter to run the oil filter on the block. $12 from GM and its yours. A lot of people will think why delete the oil cooler and what not but the way I see it is that cars made big power for years and never needed a cooler and I wont be doing 120+miles an hour for any extended periods of time so why bother? I plan on doing more frequent oil changes and that should do just fine.
In the center of this is an allen wrench opening, this is how you tighten it down
Here is the "WIX" oil filter, I learned that WIX makes NAPA's filters
Rear main seal installed
Here is my other beef with the timing cover. The valley for oil pan gasket is way too narrow. If I didn't already install it I would have ground some off. What I did instead, was press the gasket in to the valley until it seated. I may re-do this if someone has tried this and it didn't work. It seems like it may be sealed up well. I was thinking that when I got the heads on, I would block everything off and put 2psi to it? Just a thought.
Oil pan installed
That's it for now until I get my head gaskets in. Once I get the heads on I have some moddifying to do on the intake. If anyone reading this has had this issue with the oil pan gasket and that timing cover, please let me know how you got around it.
