Re: Motor rebuild for 92TY#73

Got some more done. I got all my parts in to have the short block done. Still waiting on SCE to send me my titan's. Here are some pics of what I have done since last time:

Oil pump stud

I got a milodon pick up that bolts to the pump so I wont have to worry about it falling off anymore

Last time I got as far as the cam install. Here are the cam gears and chain installed

Now I have a beef with this thing. I got this cover from Summit and it didn't fit, I had to drill out the dowel holes and do a bunch of surfacing on the inside to get rid of excess casting material. Well, I get it on, and start to install the balancer and it kept pulling the seal lip inside. So I took another seal I had laying around that came with the timing cover gasket and noticed it was considerably thinner. Swapped it out and was good to go.

Installed my over priced balancer

Here is the timing pointer, also from Summit. This I also have a beef with. It amazes me that you actually have to modify this thing to get it to fit and it is made by the same company. You see, the corner of the timing cover is rounded inwards going from the mounting surface to the wall of the cover area. Well, the pointer, is 90*. So, you have to round off the inner edge of the pointer and take some meat off of the entire bottom area to get this thing to fit right:roll: It was kind of annoying and slowed me down but I did get over it.

Here is where my daughter tells me the Typhoon is sick and gives it medicine

This is the adapter to run the oil filter on the block. $12 from GM and its yours. A lot of people will think why delete the oil cooler and what not but the way I see it is that cars made big power for years and never needed a cooler and I wont be doing 120+miles an hour for any extended periods of time so why bother? I plan on doing more frequent oil changes and that should do just fine.

In the center of this is an allen wrench opening, this is how you tighten it down

Here is the "WIX" oil filter, I learned that WIX makes NAPA's filters

Rear main seal installed

Here is my other beef with the timing cover. The valley for oil pan gasket is way too narrow. If I didn't already install it I would have ground some off. What I did instead, was press the gasket in to the valley until it seated. I may re-do this if someone has tried this and it didn't work. It seems like it may be sealed up well. I was thinking that when I got the heads on, I would block everything off and put 2psi to it? Just a thought.

Oil pan installed

That's it for now until I get my head gaskets in. Once I get the heads on I have some moddifying to do on the intake. If anyone reading this has had this issue with the oil pan gasket and that timing cover, please let me know how you got around it.

Are you sure that the oil pump pickup is going to sit in the sump correctly? Looks high to me.
As for the timing pointer, I already posted about that.

The fit of the gasket into the timing cover is supposed to be tight. Just keep working it and it will go in.
Don't forget to apply a dab of RTV in the corners at the rear main seal where it meets the block & where the timing cover meets the block. Ooop's to late for that.

It sits where the stock one sat.

Yeah I always put RTV in the corners. I really wanted to get a black gasket because the blue is just so blue and looks funny IMO but oh well.

It sure looks a lot shorter than the stock pickup height. :dunno:
You measured the clearance between the bottom of the pan & the pickup?

Re: Motor rebuild for 92TY#73

Mike, 2 questions: The oil pump pickup as mentioned and the oil filter. Won't an oil filter, in the stock location, hang down into the front driveline? My truck is apart so I can't look at it but that was my take once when I did look at it.

Edit: OK there's more. Pan will come right off at this stage to check that oil pump. (The pickup should be within 1/2 in of the bottom of the pan IMHO.) Also are you gonna degree the cam? Just curious as I want to do mine when I get there and have never done it.

Damn that is strange, my pick up tube looked nothing like that. It was a half circle and was in the same depth as the one I bought. I wish I didn't throw one away and give another away or I'd post some pics of it. Guess I'll get the deeper one.

I just took the oil pump out of mine this weekend.
I just measured it & it is 7" in height from the mounting surface to the pickup surface.
Just double-check yours.

Measured mine before I put it all in. From the oil pan surface to the end of the pick up was 7 1/2".

I have to be honest, I was going to run my heads used and cleaned up but after receiving my $180 head gaskets in the mail, something told me to take a closer look in to the heads. I bought a valve spring compressor with the intention I would just be doing seals and low and behold I found 5 broken dampner springs. Needless to say, the heads were dropped off at the machine shop yesterday for a valve job and I will assemble the heads once they return and I get all new springs.

Mike,

Good thinking. Don't forget Viton seals. You may have to have the heads cut for them.

Good to see you're moving along quick......how did the rocker arms look!?

Toss a pic up of the new head gaskets!

Nice! Better safe than sorry. Looks like everything is coming along nicely.

Re: Motor rebuild for 92TY#73

Well Mike it looks like yours will be running quite a bit before mine. (Vortec heads are coming though, yippee) Try to resist the urge to rush as you get to the end. Gonna be a nice setup. Thanks for keeping us up to date.

Did you ever figure out the oil pump pickup question?

OK, got some shit done this weekend. Went and bought a different pick up tube. I got same one only it is just as long as the stocker. I pulled my stocker out of a junk box (thought I threw it away) and it surely is longer. Here is the one I bought

Here you can see the part #

Mounted

Pics of the Titans for RY

On the block

And that is all for now. Right this second I am in serious debation weather or not to buy new lifters. There is nothing wrong with the ones I have but...... Push rods are a joke, previous owner of this motor sold me the heads, rockers, lifters, pushrods as a package. Today I dug everything out of the box they were in and lined everything up. 4 of the push rods are different length:rotf: No wonder this motor didn't make it. When I tore the block down I found pieces of a pushrod all over the place, I guess this was why, could also be why some of the valve spring dampers were broken? At any rate, can't wait to see if hte machine shop found me a match for valve springs yet. Part # for the Titan head gasket is T17064, you can get these at SCE 1-661-728-9200.

Why the Titan gaskets? Just wondering as I've thought of those as well.

Good thing we caught the short pickup tube before it was too late.

My Vortec heads were o-ringed. My machine shop and many others thought it was the best thing to do and the Titans have that silicone around the water jackets to seal them up.
