Syclone Fiberglass Bed

Re: Syclone Fiberglass Bed

I imagine all components would be held within their own aluminum tube framework, not held to the bed at all.

To avoid the costs of a lower pan made in CF...perhaps some flat aluminum sheet metal with beads rolled in to stiffen ? Held with self tap stainless bolts or rivets or even Zuess fasteners.

That's exactly what I was thinking as far as the tubing supports. It's just going to be a lot of work, expense, and at the end of it, it's hard to say how much weight would be saved. Also, a) it's hand laid, so the weight savings over fiberglass would be in question, and b) if I'm going to shell out for a CF bed, I couldn't imagine not springing for a CF bottom. It would just mean waiting and saving a little longer.

All in all, the intent is great. I'm a little concerned about the execution. Not knocking the product at all. I just don't think it is a good fit for my needs.

The ultimate solution is simple - I just need a money tree :D

Hand laid is indeed resin rich and heavier than Infusion. That is why I wanted to meet with him and see if he wanted to learn. THEN, it would be as light and strong as possible.

Word to your 'Money tree',lol.;)

I would call this the ultimate solution. No $ required.

I'm interested in the fenders for sure. The only thing is I don't wanna frabricate the vents into the finished fender. I wonder if your guy could incorporate some vents in like on the escalade or range rover.

And on to fiberglass bumper and fenders...W
I will find some downtime to get these built next month. Not sure if anyone offers the front bumper, but Jose told me 200 for that part in fiberglass.

As for the fenders, we will be building them with little to no inner structure for mounting inner fenders, other components. Not sure if this works for all of you, but that's what our plan is. I will let you know the exact price of that once we build them and have pictures. Estimate for 2 fenders is 350 in glass.

I will post more on these components once we actually build them.

Teaching "resin infusion" to a "hand layup only" glasser isn't a job I'd do for free . To the point of converging fabrication techniques , you'd have an easier time tackling the job solo IMO . Unless you saw the molds and can confirm they are infusion friendly , my second statement gets the $5 wager . There's a reason you , myself , adam , paul , etc. have not put similar big ticket items out for our limited customer base . One can price themselves out of half of that potential number rather easily when employing better materials and methods .

I think this particular bed looks fantastic , so hopefully my posting doesn't come off sounding like I'm some pompous jackoff . To keep the margins high on so few numbers produced ,I couldnt see anyone changing game plans this late in the process . That's my 2 cents worth anyway :)

Realistically speaking...whether making a mold for VIP-( Vac. Infused Process) or open mold can be the same amount of work if properly approached initially. Period. Converting an open mold to Infusion is an added step and not ALWAYS an option. I've done it many times. I made the offer in case once I've seen his molds the judgment could be made.

Where the difference begins is whether or not the plugs were perfect enough to warrant such work for Carbon/Kevlar to be brought into the build-up.

Margins are wherever one places them. But your right that a niche market can strangle a margins direction if the audience supporting said margins are not capable of grasping the opportunity of those who step up on occasion to fill product voids outside of the mfr. normal business outlines.

I do agree that this is really cool that Jose has gotten this far though. Personally I think its great. If I can teach him how to use less resin and make his molds perform better and he has the will to learn...then the Syclone enthusiasts just might see some lightweight user friendly beds out there more affordable than one might think. Plus he's in my new back-yard.

count me in on fenders. i was planning on making front fender molds once i get my truck back together but it will be much cheaper for me to buy some from you.

Re: Syclone Fiberglass Bed

Hi All, sorry I haven't been up here sooner, been too busy as of late. Jose will build me fenders as soon as I can find time to have truck out of commission for a few days to build molds. Not sure how soon I can have that done. He is also asking how many people would be interested in them besides me. Should I start a new thread to gauge interest?

Fenders will not have inner structure and cladding will be integrated one piece. They will be finished in black gel coat. I will be having the front bumper made as well for those interested.
