Good thing we caught the short pickup tube before it was too late.

Yeah, I almost left it but it kept me up one night so off to the store to get the right one I went. Glad I did too. Thanks for the catch.

Re: Motor rebuild for 92TY#73

OK, got some shit done this weekend.
Pics of the Titans for RY
Those look nice....I wish they were around when first went copper on it!

And that is all for now. Right this second I am in serious debation weather or not to buy new lifters. There is nothing wrong with the ones I have but...... Push rods are a joke, previous owner of this motor sold me the heads, rockers, lifters, pushrods as a package. Today I dug everything out of the box they were in and lined everything up. 4 of the push rods are different length:rotf: No wonder this motor didn't make it. When I tore the block down I found pieces of a pushrod all over the place, I guess this was why, could also be why some of the valve spring dampers were broken?
Yeppers...the tool bag that bought it from me didn't like the noisey roller rockers so they decided to rip the covers off and wrench them down as tight as they could and took it out directly after and broke some push rods(that must be their replacement units...lol)......I remember that call for help very well! You can lead the horse to water, but you can't make it drink....lol!

Looks good Mike....let me know when you stuff her back between the fenders or if you need a hand!

Thanks Ry. I got the long block together. Had to go get some new push rods for obvious reasons;) Got the heads back with Comp 987 valve springs, new guides, seats, valve job, retainers and seals. They look good. Here are some pics I took of what more I have done
First, I soaked the lifters

Then installed the lifters

And their retainer/guide thinga mabobbers

Installed the spring plate that holds them all down

Here are the heads

Heads in place

I dip the push rods in to assembly lube. Not sure where the pics of torquing the heads went but it did get done:roll:

Push rods installed on to lifters

Lube the tops of all of the valves

And the seat for the push rods on the roller lifters

I set the rocker arm in place, best to do this IMO, is to get it to where when one lifter is up all the way, adjust the one that is next to it. I just turn the nut until I feel the slightest resistance, then 1/2 turn.

Then install the lock

Done

On each side of the block, I installed drains

Thats all I have for now. I hope to have this in the truck within a week.

We used the Comp 987's. Can't wait to get this beast moving, still thinking it will be way closer to spring though.:(

Almost ready to drop the motor in. I made some more progress tonight and in the last week or so. Here is what I have done
Started by porting the intake, this is before

here are some after pics

I then had it glass beaded so I could paint it.

I also decided to tape the motor off and paint it. Here it is with the intake installed

So for now I am waiting on a heat shield from GM. Should be here tomorrow and then the exhaust manifolds go on with the turbo and at that point the will be ready for insertion:tup:

Re: Motor rebuild for 92TY#73

My Vortec heads were o-ringed. My machine shop and many others thought it was the best thing to do and the Titans have that silicone around the water jackets to seal them up.

This sounds like Buick mentality creeping over to me.

Bottom line, we don't have head gasket issues with the 5-bolt head pattern. If you're planing on running some really crazy boost levels (30+), then it might be warranted, but when you stick to mere-mortal boost levels, the stock or cometics will get you along just fine.

If you're talking about the motor mount shields, get the ones from Renz.... much thicker and better quality.

:rotf: You do know it now looks good right? I had to copy Morgan with the old TA fender scoop.

To be honest, I believe you. Thing of it is, the heads came to me this way and my machine shop told me just to leave them in and that for price of the copper gaskets why not? So I left them in there, besides, you never know:lol:

Nope, spark plug heat shields. I ordered what they said was the last one for the right side with two plugs.

Issues or not with the harder steel wire making an impression in the softer copper it provides a better seal than the gasket could ever alone and copper head gaskets have superior thermal conductivity to help stabilize head and block temperature the turbo produces a waaaay higher static compression ratio then a n/a motor(obviously).

I'm sure having o-ringed heads to handle higher boost pressures with more confidence will make Mike sleep better at night...lol!;)

Re: Motor rebuild for 92TY#73

Finally got my exhaust manifolds to fit and have everything just about ready to drop in to the truck tomorrow. Only thing left is the dipstick tube and maybe a few small loose ends like motor mounts:lol:

That's about it until tomorrow. The turbo I will remove for install. Plus, in appears the machine shop managed to lose two of the nuts. Also I have the pulleys left to paint install. I keep forgetting about these damn things. If worse comes to worse I don't HAVE TO install them first. Something tells me I wont get this thing in tomorrow but I am damn sure going to try.

Lookin' good Mike. You and I are building different motors and you're gonna have yours running way before mine but your posts about the build are great.

Be careful. The closer you get to firing the thing the more you're tempted to cut corners just to get it running. Avoid the urge.

Good luck!!

Thanks Don. Oh don't I know about cutting the corners. I already contemplated twice not doing the fuel system I was going to do. Luckily my tank has already been sumped so there is no turning back now:lol: I even thought about skipping all the re-wiring I was going to do but to my surprise, the wife talked me out of that one. I am just going to try and do it right the first time and be done.

You should have installed the dipstick before the manifolds.

:rotf:Thats what I was saying when I was trying to get it in this morning. I did get it in though. Took me about 10 minutes. I even meant to do it but with all of the trouble I was having with the manifolds I forgot.

I got the engine in the truck now.

Can't wait to get this thing really going. Looks like fuel system will be next.
